Plagiarism and People's Commissar |
On Nov 20, 2003, I posted a short reply to a Usenet post.
On Nov 21, a poster named "People's Comissar" replies to my post and
compliments me by saying, "That is a GREAT quote!" The attribution is
intact clearly showing that I am the author of the quote.
On Nov. 26, six days later, my quote was reposted in a "Quote of the
Month" posting by a poster named "Nemo". My words were not attribtued
to me, but to a poster named "People's Commissar".
In early December, a web page appears. This web page claims that
People's Comissar is the author of my original quote, verbatim. This
claim appears to have originated on alt.atheism.
On Dec. 25, "People's Comissar" begins using my quote in his sig file
without attributing it to me.

I don't post to alt.atheism!
If you want to keep track of which news groups you are posting
to, Outlook Express is one of the most awkward news readers to
have. But somewhere in the menu structure, it is possible.

Yipes, then it was "respond to" people who crossposted and it just got there
that way. Oh well...
I'm not subscribed to alt.atheism at all. So then, I saw posts and reponded
to them elsewhere.

You were scooped centuries ago:
"It would seem that fear is not the beginning of wisdom. For the
beginning of a thing is a part thereof. But fear is not a part of
wisdom, since fear is seated in the appetitive faculty, while wisdom is
in the intellect." -- Thomas Aquinas (playing devil's advocate)
A more recently:
"The fear of God is not the beginning of wisdom. The fear of God is the
death of wisdom. Skepticism and doubt lead to study and investigation,
and investigation is the beginning of wisdom." -- Clarence Darrow

Hmm, seriously - if a person or people are feeling fear, certain chemicals
activate that make "wisdom" and even "logic" kinda take a back step to
emotional REACTION. So fear is never the beginning of wisdom in the
literal, neurological sense, either. Heh.... (don't throw eggs at me, now).

he finds a new object to obsess upon; ignoring him utterly is your best bet.
He changes nyms to get around the thousands of killfiles created almost

Yeah. You know it, I know it, everyone with a brain knows it, and that

What quote? I have a quote about fear and ignorance that I DID see someone
else using - not exactly the same exact wording. But I didn't make the
quote up - and I've seen it in hard copy before. Jefferson, maybe? Paine?
