Planet of Morons |
How many times in the last few days have you heard someone claim
in all seriousness that the weather in New England proves that
global warming isn't happening? I have read it dozens --perhaps
hundereds of times-- in the last few day on USENET.
The argument "There can't be global warming because it is extremely
cold where I am today" is on par with "I know there is no evolution
because I have watch animals for hours without once seeing one evolve."
All these arguments prove is that we are living on a planet that is
rife with morons.

Especially since it may just be the warming trend that makes
weather systems like they have now in the northeast more likely.

Global warming is altering weather patterns. Some places may be
unusually cold for a while and some unusually hot or wet or dry. The
fact remains that the average temperature at the Earth's surface is
rising.

that there is global warming?
Just curious.

Yes. "It's extremely hot where I am today" is no better an argument
for global warming. And "I saw an animal evolve after watching it
for an hour" is a good argument for a padded cell.

What's worse is that if you try to point out to them that they are morons,
they get very hostile. And there's a lot of them. My advice (FWIW):
Keep a low profile.
Fight idiocy at a grass-roots level.
Remove as many warning stickers as you can, especially from butane
lighters. I mean, do you really WANT to protect someone who has to be
told not to point a lighter at his face before lighting it?
If you get caught, act dumb.

Not exactly. Even the argument "There's no global warming because the
average temperature here has been going down" isn't an argument
against global warming, it's an argument against local warming.

That argument ranks right up there with "That tornado killed every
person in town but me. Thank god!"

Unless the person is thanking his god for killing all those people
because he couldn't stand them.
