I don't have AOL, but I've received about 30 or 40 of the phony MS emails in
the past two days. Actually, I have received part of the email with a
message from my ISP that atttachments have been deleted due to presence of a
virus.

Yeah, been hit by them myself. Set NAV up to dispose of them silently, now

Sheesh, I had about 200 of them hit my hotmail address in the first day.
But none have hit my 10 other email addresses including some AOL

Which is better anywise. Didn't even know I could do that before this

There have been a number of bogus "Microsoft updates" that have hit my AOL
account. I hope you didn't bite into one of those.
It contains the virus/viri called "W32.Swen.A@mm" and
"Worm.Automat.AHB".
I recieved if from the email address
"MS Corporation Public Support"
Symantec Antivirus Corporate detects it since 18-Sep.
Definitions of 17-Sep and before don't see it.

Just out of curiosity, is there a way to get rid of these stupid messages
before they get loaded into my mailbox? I just delete them, but they
are getting very frequent. Yesterday, half of my mailbox was these stupid
things and they take a long time to load.
They don't seem to be straightforward to filter out since the headings and
the sender change all the time.
Thanks,
John Anderson

There are some keywords that you can use. If you want to discuss specifics
"offline", I might be able to offer suggestions. Specifically, you'll need
to investigate what your email software will let you do *before* the
message is downloaded. Microshaft Outlook seems to offer "delete from
server" and "do not download from server" as options, based ostensibly on
subject line only. You might have a list of key words or phrases, but not
too awfully many.
Personally, I am down to less than 6 attempts a day, since I am having AOL
block out the entire contents of "someone's" address book. And the virus
has damaged the source system to the point that the attachment is only 6
bytes long most of the time.

There's a program called "Mail Washer" which enables you to look at mail
headers before you download your mail.
You can then "bounce" the junk mail without downloading it.

Hitting the paperclip executes the code.
If it is titled from Microsoft, it is a lie. If it says latest update, it
is a lie. Updates of Microsoft products are only obtained by sticking your
nose firmly up... sorry. By logging onto Microsoft's website.
If you can see the name of the file, do NOT execute any of the following
*.exe
*.com
*.pif
*.mim
*.bat
*.html or *.htm (although MicroShaft may have fixed this one)
*.dll
Apple does have different executables, but present no real fallow ground
for a hacker.
If you're not sure (or even if you are), get a virus scanner, and update
your definitions *every week*. The information on your disk, including any
financial transactions, are your business only.
If your email software is current, it will request a virus scan, even when
decoding MIME embedded code.
I personally suspect this last year's worth of virus attacks as attempts to
get cash from the citizenry in order to fund more terrorism. Many of these
were not, as obvious attempts just to stuff it to Bill. But we are all
entitled to our paranoia...

Usually to set trojans into thousands of computers, giving the hacker
that many accesses to whatever. Sometimes to overload someones site,
or to perform malicious deeds under the names of the individual
owners. Fortunately the FBI, CIA, etc knows that.
If you *don't* get anti virus software you should ditch your computer.
Same for a firewall and spyware scanners, like AdAware from
lavasoftusa.com.
I hate to sound insulting, but as there are enough suckers out there
to bite into spam to keep it in business (spammers pay $thousands on
their access and still make huge profits), there are enough naive
people running computers without protection to keep hackers and
terrorists in business.
There is some talk that computers running the power grid were
compromised causing the big blackout but they are keeping that quiet.
And yes, large companies get hit all the time.

There are also people who know what they are
doing and are not affected by spam, trojan or not.
There are other ways to avoid trojans and
worms and virii, without paying or doing anything.
It is those who pay that are the suckers. :-)
And so are those who slow the computer down with
unneeded software.
Even with daily updates it is still possible
to get zapped, I try to avoid that small chance.
