Well.
I am mentor in an introductory science program for disadvantaged high
school kids. Every Spring a few hundred of the kids from all over the
state are invited to the state capital to present posters about their
research projects. We also have a motivational speaker at the main
dinner. This year we listened to a wonderful woman who spoke about her
grandmother (a freed slave) and how she helped the speaker on her
journey to academic and personal success. She spoke about academics
and rational thinking. She spoke about committment, tenacity, homework,
research and studying. She even mentioned some of her teachers- one
being a nun and another a priest. But she never- not once, not ever,
not in any single circumstance, not even in passing- mentioned god.
How nice not being hauled through someone else's Jesus moment for a
change.
I find this particularly pleasant given the death of the pope today.
