Police gaffe makes Muslims pray in wrong direction
Fri Apr 13, 8:40 AM ET
A Dutch police station trying to help Muslim detainees face Mecca for
their prayers painted arrows in cells pointing in the wrong direction.
The Segbroek police station in The Hague borrowed the idea of putting
compass marks on ceilings from an Amsterdam hotel, the Dutch daily De
Telegraaf reported on Friday.
Muslims pray five times a day, facing east in the direction of Mecca.
But the arrows in Segbroek pointed west.
"This is a really gigantic, stupid blunder," a police spokesman told the
De Telegraaf.
"The faulty compass marks have been immediately corrected. It is a
mystery for us how this could have possibly happened."
All other police cells in the Dutch capital will soon get similar
compass marks, the in-house newspaper of The Hague police said.
The Netherlands is home to 1 million Muslims out of a population of more
than 16 million.
Immigration and the integration of newcomers have been hot topics since
the rise and murder of populist politician Pim Fortuyn in 2002, who said
the country could not absorb any more foreigners.

Prayers must be like guided missiles.
If they weren't, then being just a couple of seconds of a minute of a degree
out in Holland would mean that they miss their target (Mecca) by miles. A
small error at the "launch" end could easily be caused by a slight nod of
the head, a cough, a sneeze or even a fart. Being guided, it therefore
wouldn't matter in which direction the prayers were launched, they could do
a 'U' turn in mid air and head towards their intended target. Prayers can be
'launched' anywhere on the earth and still reach their target, so there
doesn't appear to be a limit to their range and they appear to be unaffected
by gravity. There may indeed be a 'time to live' for prayers, but this has
yet to be established.

One also has to wonder how the Muslims will deal with being up in space
and/or on another planet, should mankind ever get that far. How does one
face "east" in deep space (or on Mars)?

Just aim in the Earth's general direction. The "day" part is somewhat
more complicated, but I'm sure they have some solution to that too,
probably something similar to the one that makes it possible to
survive Ramadan north of the pole circle in the summer. (I have a
faint memory about reading an article about a Muslim astrounaut who
did not have to pray five times for each orbit around the earth)

Don't knock Muslim parayer rituals.
On the whole, I'd prefer to see them scraping their heads across the floor

Are prayers affected by gravity? I suppose they must be, otherwise it
would be forbidden for Muslims to travel out of sight of Mekka.
Without the gravity effect prayers from a distance would just get out
in space, and the idea of praying in a certain direction would be
meaningless, because anybody praying in the US (for example) would
have her/his prayers end up in some distant galaxy.
With the gravity affecting prayers, well, it's probably one of those
fine tuned constants we hear about too much, The gravity constant is
just right so that a prayer from half way around the world will end up
exactly in Mekka. Of cuorse the people who was misled into praying in

No, if there were someone listening the direction would be
unimportant. As it is, the direction is very important since it adds
another excuse to why prayer doesn't work. "You aimed your prayer in

Could be. I recently read an article about the US 'facility' at
Guantanamo where, in order to keep the prisoners happy or at least not
in open revolt, in addition to the arrow pointing East, they also had
all of the toilets face North South. I suppose it's considered
blasphemous to face Mecca when you're sitting on the can. What nonsense!

All other police cells in the Dutch capital will soon get similar

Shouldn't they also be facing down, about 15 degrees? Otherwise they'd be
facing Jupiter or anything else on a tangent to the earth's curvature.

All other police cells in the Dutch capital will soon get similar
compass marks, the in-house newspaper of The Hague police said.
Shouldn't they also be facing down, about 15 degrees? Otherwise they'd be
facing Jupiter or anything else on a tangent to the earth's curvature.
Good point. I suppose if they are exactly opposite Mecca on the Earth's
surface, wherever that is, they should face the floor.

Shouldn't they be facing southeast from the Netherlands? If they face
directly east, their prayers will end up somewhere in Russia
depending, of course, on speed and longevity. How many degrees out of
true is acceptable for prayers? Wouldn't some sort of homing spell
would solve the problem of misdirection?

What about the Muslims who are on the opposite side of Earth
from Mecca in Brazil? No matter which way they face, they
are facing Mecca as well as in any other direction. Of
course, no matter which way they face, they are also
pointing their asses at Mecca.

Or what about the Muslims who are standing three feet to the east of
Mecca. Shouldn't they turn around and face west? That way their prayers
don't have to travel 27,000 miles around the earth and would presumably
not lose as much power?

I had a book which essentially contained letters from the Crusades and there
was mention of teh "newbies" turning Muslims around to face the "right"
direction.
It also mentioned the survival rate of the Muslim wounded treated with herbs
and cleanliness as opposed to the Christians who had crosses cut in their
scalp and salt poured in to drive out the demons.

They're clear, unless they pass gas.

I'm surprised something hasn't happened yet.

I guess the führers haven't told their slaves yet that they must rise in
spontaneous righteous protest(TM).

I haven't heard of some Imam getting up in a mosque and denouncing it
yet. That's how these things usually start. Isn't religion wonderful?

At least the fanatical organized kind, yeah.

Have you noticed with all the assassinations and bombings in Iraq
they've stopped drooling about 'God Swill?'
