Police: Suspect says he attacked 'the devil' |
http://www.indystar.com/articles/0/203579-4660-093.html
A Whiteland man arrested in the near-fatal attack of a town minister
before Sunday morning services told police he was attempting to kill
the devil, investigators alleged in court documents.
"I choked him until I knew he was not breathing," according to a
police report quoting suspect David Cooper, 40, 600 block of Brewer
Street.
Johnson County Prosecutor Lance Hamner charged Cooper this afternoon
with attempted murder. Cooper was held without bail at the Johnson
County Jail in Franklin.
Cooper was asked during questioning by police if he thought he might
hurt the pastor while trying to kill the devil.
"I couldn't kill a human being," Cooper answered, according to the
probable cause affidavit seeking the charge. "I was killing the
devil."
The condition of Whiteland Missionary Baptist Church's pastor, Elder
William McElroy, had not improved at Community Hospital South 24 hours
after the attack, said Johnson County sheriff's Maj. Steve Byerly.
"He's in extremely critical condition."
The probable cause affidavit and a police report detailed Sunday's
incident:
Prior to the assault, Cooper had asked his neighbor, George Smith, for
a ride to church, 210 N. Front St., Whiteland. However, Cooper got out
of Smith's car and kneeled in the street and began praying. Moments
later, Fred Drake, also a church member, was driving down the street
and saw Cooper.
Cooper got into Drake's car and wanted to go to the church. During the
short ride, Cooper told Drake he loved him and asked that, if anything
happened to him, would he pray for him and take care of his family.
Drake did not enter the church but let Cooper out.
Church members Barbara J. Frazier and Helen Bennet told investigators
they entered the sanctuary and saw Cooper on top of McElroy by the
altar and heard Cooper yelling. McElroy was not moving.
Cooper started crawling on his hands and knees toward Bennet. When
Frazier asked who was lying on the floor, Cooper answered: "He was the
devil."
Bennet told sheriff's investigator Lt. Phil Murphy that Cooper grabbed
her arm and told her and Frazier they needed to pray. While engaged in
prayer, Frazier slipped away and called 911.
Whiteland police Officer Jason Davis arrived and began cardiopulmonary
resuscitation. However, Cooper pushed Davis aside and began choking
the already unconscious 72-year-old McElroy. Davis and Elder Jerry
Burke attempted to stop Cooper but could not.
Davis used a Taser weapon to shock Cooper into releasing his grip.
During an interview with detectives, Cooper said he went to church to
kill the devil and at first intended to use a knife. However, Cooper
said God told him he would give him the strength to use his bare
hands.
Cooper also said the devil had taken the form of "Brother Bill,"
referring to McElroy.
When asked why he jumped on McElroy after emergency technicians and
police arrived, Cooper said: "I didn't want for them to revive the
devil -- I had to make sure he was dead."

[Fade from black]
[The scene opens up looking back into an alley from the sidewalk of a
city street. The day is gray and gloomy, it's raining. The sound of
the dripping rainwater is somewhat emphasized.]
[Distant chatter is heard, a few young voices - mostly male - saying
indeterminable things as the camera pans back into the alley. Trash
and clutter is everywhere. The camera passes by an unconscious
junkie, needle still stuck in his strap-banded arm and a collection of
small paper bags (bottle-shaped) laying beside him. The age of each
bag can be roughly ascertained by how wet and tore up the bags are,
some revealing the labels of whisky bottles. The camera approaches
one doorway off to the right. It's about to pan in through the door
but a momentary commotion off to the side forces it to back away. A
fresh body flies by, knife still in its back, landing with the
characteristic 'dead-man thud'. Then the camera proceeds once more
towards the door.]
[The door opens to reveal a dark, smokey room, with plywood walls
painted glossy black and strange symbols painted in blood red all over
the place. The grisly remains of untold numbers and species of small
animals hang from every wall and corner, some things suggesting
possible human origin but nothing that would make such a thing
explicit. The voices are louder, and the subject of conversation
becomes discernible. The camera rounds a corner and opens up on the
scene of a group of young punks, mostly male. Four are gathered at a
table while two or three are sitting off to the side doing drinking,
smoking and doing nothing much of anything in particular. They all
look sinister, gothic, evil and all-around scary. As the camera opens
up upon this scene, it becomes clear from their conversation -
including such things as "12th level polymath", "chaotic evil wizards"
and "ring of reckoning" - that they are playing a role-playing game,
probably D&D(TM) but at least something very similar. They talk about
things such as demons and dragons and monsters of the sort most
"polite" people never even imagine. They discuss such events as
character dismemberment, mutilations, devourings, manglement, etc...
etc... etc... This goes on for but a few seconds, then the camera
returns to the scene in the alley just outside the door.]
[Below the scene, the caption, "...several hours later..."]
[The young punks emerge from the building, greasier and dirtier than
before. They're talking about their recent game and as the door
opens, one of them kicks aside the dead body from earlier - now
rat-covered - as the group proceeds out to the street.]
[As they round the corner, they look into the window of their favorite
store front - a game shop specializing in role-playing games which
they clearly frequent. In the window is on particularl display about
a new role-playing game, with a sign that reads, "This family-oriented
game is inspired by and based upon Biblical events!"]
[The camera focuses back upon the horrified faces of the young punks
as they heave a collective shudder.]
Apparent leader of the group, visibly shaken: "Whoa... creepy..."
[The group of young punks continues on their gothic little way,
continuing to twitch and shudder nervously at the horrific display as
they do]
[fade to black - the end]

UPDATE: The minister died. I still don't see any motive besides the
fact that he thought the minister was the devil. Also this from the

Jones said Cooper had received treatment earlier this year at a mental

"But the best we now know, he hasn't been taking his medication since
sometime in September," Jones said.
