Catholic League president Bill Donohue commented today on the latest Muslim
reaction to Pope Benedict XVI's address at Regensburg University on
September 12:
"It is a mark of a civilized people that they answer discourse they find
disagreeable in a rational manner. Sadly, many Muslims are responding to the
pope's speech in an irrational way, making true dialogue next to impossible.
To compare the pope to Hitler, as a high-ranking Turkish official did, is
the mark of an uncivilized person. To burn the pope in effigy, as the thugs
in Srinagar, India, have done, is also the mark of incivility. Both are
classic examples of Muslim overkill.
"Ironically, these pathetic examples underscore the central message of the
pope's address: he was beckoning the world to embrace both faith and reason.
Reason unhinged from faith delivers a debased conception of mankind, the
result of which has often been violence on a grand scale. But it is also
true that faith unhinged from reason is capable of delivering the same
outcome. Sadly, this part of the pope's message has gone unheard in much of
the Islamic world.

Muslims fly aeroplanes into American office blocks. The attacks were clearly
planned when President Clinton was still in power, so you can't blame
President Bush's foreign policy.
The reaction from the Islamic world is complex. Not all Muslims totally
agree with the terrorists, but many give a certian amount of tacit support.
At Leeds University, of course the Islamic society formally distances
itself from the attacks. But now the young Muslim man has a credibility that
the earnest young Christian lacks. Whilst the Chrisitian is seen as a freak
or a square, the Muslim is not seen like this by his mates, the glamour of
the terrorists rubs off on him. Then a bomb goes off in London, and it turns
out that one of the Muslim students at Leeds University was hanging about
with the bombers, though he appears to have been innocent.
But we cannot describe this phenomenon for what it is, without being accused
of racism, because few white men are Muslims, or provocation, because any
attack on Islam is then used as justification for further acts of terror.

His statements on Islam are not infallible. They are an official Papal
pronouncement and should be taken seriously, but a Catholic is free to
beleive that they were imprudent or even to disagree with them. Only when
the Pope formally promulages dogma must Catholics either agree with him or
leave the Church.
