Pope Benedict XVI: World needs courageous, caring, mature priests |
Even non-Catholics have to admire the pontiff for addressing each of the
Church's issues. The Vatican has stepped-up to the challenge.

World needs courageous, caring, mature priests, said pontiff at Rome
seminary
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Today's world needs courageous, caring priests who are
not afraid to bring God's love to all people, especially to those
languishing in poverty or struggling with difficulties, Pope Benedict XVI
told members of a Rome seminary.
But pastors must also be mature, lead holy lives and faithfully comply with
the church's teaching authority if they are to be effective evangelizers and
bring hope to the world, the pope said.
The pope made his remarks Jan. 20 during an audience with some 60 members of
Almo Capranica College, a diocesan seminary of Rome.
"In order to respond to the expectations of modern society" and be part of
the enormous task of evangelization, "prepared and courageous priests are
needed, who without ambition and fear, but convinced of Gospel truth, make
proclaiming Christ their first concern," the pope said.
Today's priests must "be ready to bow before human suffering" and help
everyone feel "the comfort of God's love and the warmth of the ecclesial
family," he said.
While such care and concern must be extended to all people, "the poor and
those immersed in difficulty" need special attention, he said.
In order to carry out these duties, priests need to embody "human maturity
and a diligent compliance with revealed truth which the magisterium of the
church faithfully presents," Pope Benedict said.
They also must demonstrate "a serious commitment to personal holiness" and
lead a virtuous life that is especially marked by humility and charity, he
added.
As shepherds of the church, pastors need to help foster a sense of communion
among their parishioners so that "everyone might have a growing awareness of
belonging to the one body of Christ," said the pope.
The pope told seminarians the more they "keep their gaze fixed on Christ"
and "remain in communion with him," the more they would be able to
"faithfully follow in his footsteps."

The Church has ordained widowers with grown children as priests...I
might be a little more willing to listen to the real-world experience on
love, sex, marriage & family from someone like him, than to a guy with no
more of it than J Yo has.

You brain-dead idiot, the RC church needs to use some of its enormous
wealth to fund contraception schemes in aids-ravaged Africa, then it
needs to allow women priests so the scourge of paedophilia is wiped
away from the priesthood, and then it needs to disavow people of all
this silly shrine and miracle nonsense, such as Lourdes. Then perhaps
it should eschew anything else which lacks real-world evidence.

But are not punished equally.
A female of 23 years old was convicted in New Zealand for sexual
intercourse with a 13 year old, her punishment, 250hours community
service - sorry, if that had been a guy, he would have been locked away
instant, and had the victim been a girl, and the pupertrator been a
guy, same situation - instant time in the slammer.

** A fitting type of community service would conducting hands-on sex
education classes to boys aged 12 and up.
- sorry, if that had been a guy, he would have been locked away
instant, and had the victim been a girl, and the pupertrator been a
guy, same situation - instant time in the slammer.
** Indeed. It puzzles me why 15 -17 year olds can be tried as an adult,
and yet they are jail bait. In a recent case involving minor boys, the DA
asserted that the boy-victims had been victinized by the female defendant
for several years, yet said "victims" would routinely stop by a drug store
and purchase condoms as they bicycled their way over to the defendant's
house.

LOL! True. Change does come slow to the RCC, doesn't it? I wonder how
many centuries it will take them to admit that they were wrong about
protecting pedophile priest and actually apologizing for their part in it?

€€ like molassas in January at Point Barrow, Alaska.
I wonder how

€€ That seems unlikely due to the nature of the crime. Another sticky
wicket is papal infallibility since some would be sure to ask: If the
pope is infallible, why didn't he take action to ameliorate the nasty
problem two decades ago when altar-boy buggery was first reported in major
U. S. newspapers?

Yes, in fact a Catholic friend of mine was mentioning that just the other
day. With the Pope banning openly gay men, coupled with their current
inability to attract men to the priesthood, they are facing some severe
priest shortages. I remember when I was growing up during the 1950's
parents would be proud to have at least one of their sons become a priest,
now I don't know any parent that would wish that upon them.

Well, they burned Joan of Arc at the stake in 1431, and the church
forgave her finally by canonizing her in 1924.
1924 minus 1431 = 493 years difference, so we can expect an apology
from the RCC sometime in the year 2499. Or they'll canonize Fathers
Shanley and Geoghan for being "martyrs." Depends on which queen in a
bad dress is running the show.

She's got the same problem 60 years later, too, with the sex abuse

Toward the end of WWII, the Nazis were conscripting children as young as 10
and putting uniforms on them. At the time Ratzinger became a Hitler Youth,
it was voluntary, and you had to meet certain physical requirements (The
Aryan Look, as they called it.), and you had to take a specific oath to the
Nazi Party and its ideals.

No yet they haven't.
And no they don't.

Copernicus and DaVinci were right after only 400-years.
LOL! True. Change does come slow to the RCC, doesn't it? I
wonder how many centuries it will take them to admit that they were
wrong about protecting pedophile priest and actually apologizing
for their part in it?
Well, they burned Joan of Arc at the stake in 1431, and the church
forgave her finally by canonizing her in 1924.
1924 minus 1431 = 493 years difference, so we can expect an apology
from the RCC sometime in the year 2499. Or they'll canonize Fathers
Shanley and Geoghan for being "martyrs." Depends on which queen in a
bad dress is running the show.
LOL! True. They made a nazi the pope so anything is possible.
Ya know -- right after Queen Benedict was appointed ***** for Life of
Vatican City, I would read the "He's a Nazi" claims, and I would
actually say, "But he was 15 when he joined the Hitlerjugend. How
culpable could he have been at 15?"
I knew t6hat, too, which makes my previous defense of Queen Benedict
even worse.
But ya know what? ***** that *****.
If Queen Benedict was so damn holy and pure, then why weren't his
personal religious convictions strong enough to inform his conscience
that abetting evil (specifically the Hitler regime, by joining up) was
wrong?
She's got the same problem 60 years later, too, with the sex abuse
scandal and the new Vatican Bank scandal.
You'd think that an omniscient, omnipotent being would be able to
select a better spokesmodel, too. But that's a different topic.
Well, you know what they say about omnipotent beings, they are as we create
them.
How true.
But it's the 21st century -- you'd think by now humanity would create
an omniscient, omnipotent being with a brain, a conscience, and some
good old-fashioned common sense.
