A great man.
Certainly a great conservative who's probably stacked the deck
sufficiently to ensure that tradition continues, although he doesn't
appear to be dead at the time of writing.

As far as "Great men" go, this Pope may have been
only so-so, but he was light years beyond many
national leaders in the United States or even the
U.K.
While other Popes & U.S./U.K. governments invested
their efforts into bringing despots to power, this Pope
was instrumental in bringing about actual reform. The
most obvious example would be Poland & the success
of Solidarity.
The lunatic right-wing likes to pretend it was Ronald
Reagan who finally won the cold war, driving the
Soviet Union to extinction with his obscene spending.
However, the true legacy of the Reagan years isn't the
collapse of the Iron curtain -- John Paul II ripped a
gaping hole in that with Poland -- it was the invention
of Osama Bin Laden, and his Al Qaida which sprung
from the Republican-financed training camps.
More recently, this Pope had sense enough to keep
the church out of internal U.S. politics, despite every
effort by the Republican party to get them involved.
This Pope went against George Bush. This Pope told
Bush "No."
U.S. internal politics wasn't the only area where the
Pope refused to do Bush's dirty work, the Pope also
voiced opposition to the war. The government of the
U.K. didn't do that. Heck, not even the government of
Spain or Italy could be bothered. Yes, Spain finally
did turn against the war, but long after Bush declared
his victory.
This Pope is ("was" isn't yet appropriate) old fashioned.
In fact, I'd say he most definitely is of the old school.
But, he most certainly has been the greatest of the "old"
Popes. He may be *Way* behind the times on social
issues, but he's actually slightly ahead of the curve for
100 years ago. I doubt the next Pope will be "Catching
up," but hopefully he'll be at least a few decades closer
to the present than this Pope. If he is, and he continues
the policies of this Pope -- investing more in political
reform than despots -- he'll leave the world a better
place.
It would be nice if the Pope could be a truly "Great"
leader. But, in the grand scheme of things, he doesn't
have to be. All he has to manage is to be better than
his contemporaries -- Reagan, Bush & Blair for
example -- and John Paul II has accomplished that
much... at least in certain key areas.

Well said.
He was certainly one of the best Popes, which might not be saying much, but
like you said, despite his opinions on social issues, he did a lot more than
that for many countries.
Hope he goes peacefully.

Nope...not yet....it's 4 hours later and he's still hanging on. It's
amazing what millions of dollars of medical care can achieve! How many poor
catholics can't afford to have the most basic medical care by the way?
Wonder how many of them could be treated with the money being wasted to keep
him alive for a few more days?

If it's true that he's died, may I be the first to congratulate Duke on
getting something right for once. It is Atheists Day after all!
