I hope everyone is ready for weeks of shameless public necrophilia!
The most frightening thing about this is...this man who has caused suffering
and discrimination for millions has been the best pope EVER! Compared to
his predecessors, he's a bastion of reform, modernisation and
liberalisation! His successor will inevitably try to make his own mark on
the Pontificate by making things even more conservative and dogmatic. I can
foresee a certain amount of "well I'm not quite so sure about evolution"
from the next guy!

Yup. I've been hearing for years that people expect the next sex expert to
be way less "liberal" than JP2. Hard to imagine without images of the
Inquisition coming to mind.

For a devout god-head he's clinging on pretty dearly to life.
How many times must he dodge a bullet (pun intended) before he gets the
hint?

The "sacrament of the sick" is what it's called now, apparently:
http://www.cbc.ca/story/world/national/2005/03/31/pope050331.html
According to CBC, it doesn't necessarily mean he's dying. After all,
he was given the same sacrament after he was shot in 1981.
However, if the Vatican is admitting he's this sick, he's probably
pretty close to dead. It's kind of like the old Soviet leaders. One
day, they were suffering from a cold, the next they were dead.

For the past few weeks when they've rolled the Pope to the hospital window
that he's had strings attached to his hands so he can wave like a puppet.

You know that's what weakened him. Buncha vampires sucking the last

Apparently, it's no longer called "last rites" but "The Sacrament of
the Sick" or the "Anointing of the Sick".
Interestingly, according to wikipedia, the sacrament traces its roots
back to James 5:14,15 where it is stated that if you are sick and you
get elders of the church to pray over you and anoint you with oil in
the name of God, "the Lord will make them well."
Does this mean there is some sort of deity-binding guarantee that JP2
won't die?

Yup. Providing, of course, that God *wants* you to get sick and die.
