Pope: Rules of Christianity Not a Burden
Sat Aug 13, 7:24 PM ET
Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday rejected the idea of Christianity as a
religion of rules and prohibitions, and said on the eve of his trip to
Germany for World Youth Day that it is "beautiful to be a Christian."
The pope also discussed the role of the Church within today's society,
as well as Europe's Christian roots, during an interview with Vatican
Radio to be aired Sunday.
Referring to the Catholic Church's World Youth Day this week in Cologne,
Benedict said he hoped the celebrations would give "a fresh impulse to
an old continent," Vatican Radio said in a release.
"The idea that is most widespread is that Christians must observe an
immensity of commandments and prohibitions, and that we are more free
without such burdens," Benedict said. "Instead, I want to be clear about
the fact that being supported by a great Love is not a burden, and that
it is beautiful to be a Christian."
Benedict's pilgrimage to Germany for the Aug. 17-21 event is his first
foreign trip as pope. The high-point will be an open-air mass on the
final day that Benedict will lead at the 640-acre Marienfeld, a former
open-pit coal mine. As many as 1 million people are expected to attend.

No doubt. However the RCC sets up all of these rules and regulations,
especially in regard to sexuality, which are almost impossible not to
break at least some of the time. Then you have to go running back to the
church for 'forgiveness'. Then they let us go knowing that we'll only
have to come back again and again. It's their way of keeping the sheep
on a short leash.

This reminds me of a joke tacked onto the end of the movie "The God That
Wasn't There."
JP II arrives at the gates of heaven and asks for entrance. St Peter
says "Sure, you led a Godly life... come on in!"
Once inside, St. Peter says, "So, JP. What would you like to see first?"
John Paul immediately says "You know, all these years, I've been curious
about the 'original autograph' of the Bible. You know, folks have been
talking a lot about that back on Earth."
Peter says, "No problem. Step right this way."
Peter leads him to a small room that holds the original, unedited
version of the Bible, and lets JP II in. After a few minutes, he hears
the old Pontiff yell "Oh *****!"
Peter goes in and says, "What's the matter?"
JP II says, "All these years... and the real word was 'CELEBRATE!' "

JP II says, "All these years... and the real word was 'CELEBRATE!' "

That's an oldy, but it still rates a few chuckles. :-)
Someone sent me this one a few weeks back:
JP2 arrives at the gates of heaven. St. Peter looks up from his book and
says in a rather hard voice: "Oh! You. We've been expecting you. Come
with me. God wants to see you, like now!"
JP2 starts to exclaim how grand it is to be in heaven and that he is
finally going to see God face to face, but St. Peter cuts him off
abruptly and motions for him to follow.
A bit bemused by the coolness of his welcome, the former pope follows
St, Pete through the pearly gates, along the streets paved with gold,
and into an enormous palace. Inside they enter a gigantic throne room
and climb a long flight of stairs. At the top of the stairs is a huge
throne, surrounded by clouds of angels, and on which sits God the
supreme ruler of the universe.
And she is looking very angry.

That's 'not' eating fish, right?
Yes, but if you mention that to them, you'll get into a big 'discussion'
over 'free will'. Of course, they will gloss over the fact that an all
good and all merciful god would have permitted us to choose something
that would cause us eternal suffering. Especially over something as
trivial as diet.

There is a big scandal around NYC about a priest who was caught with a

seems the Church cannot empathize with herotosexuals.
