ROME: Pope Benedict XVI worked to quell anger in South America
over his recent comments on the conversion of native populations,
conceding Wednesday that "unjustifiable crimes" were committed
in the conquest of the continent 500 years ago.
The pope, speaking Italian, said at a weekly audience that it was:
"not possible to forget the suffering and the injustices inflicted by
colonizers against the indigenous population, whose fundamental
human rights were often trampled."
His comments came after a speech he gave last week during his visit to
Brazil in which he said that native populations had been "silently
longing"
for the faith brought to South America by colonizers. :-D
