The break-in of a Sauvie Island doctor’s home last week, and the
hateful spray painted messages left behind, has outraged this
tightknit community.

The attack occurred in the middle of the day. Nothing was stolen.
But threatening messages were scrawled all over the gay doctor’s truck
and inside his rural home.
The culprit left words like “Die like your lover” referring to the
man’s partner, who died less than a year ago.
Sauvie Island, which sits only about 10 miles from downtown Portland,
is usefully peaceful. There’s little violence here and hate crimes
like this are unheard of.
Said neighbor David Durham: "There's a lot of really nice people out
here and we all take time to spend time with each other and know each
other so it seemed bizarre, definitely."
Police don’t know who is behind the attack, nor do they have a motive.
They are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.
Hate crimes are aimed at tearing neighbors apart. Yet, in the case of
this island community, it has brought people closer. Neighbors
organized a cleaning party to help wash off all of the spray paint.
