Prayer at Graduation |

Pictured is one of my former students. This issue is really getting
ugly and I'm shocked that the people in Indianapolis aren't more aware
of the constitution.
There's a poll on the page. Let's tip the scales a bit in our favor!

I told you there would be a prayer...
A student called for a moment of silence. Then the audience
"spontaneously" broke into the Lord's Prayer. After which there was
applause and cheers from the crowd. It wasn't school sponsored, but
I thought it was obnoxious.

I do not believe in censorship, nor in imposing your views forcefully,
either way. It sounds like the school is making the right decision by
not getting involved. What I don't understand is why the students are
unable to come to a solution that will satisfy both sides, such as the
parties that want prayer to stay for a little extra after the main
cermony (or to start early) to fulfill their religious needs. If need
be, there can even be two ceremonies. No need to turn such things into
war of wills.

There will be a separate "baccalaureate" ceremony which is
nondenominational Christian. I still don't understand why that isn't
enough. I totally agree that they have the right to use the school
for that ceremony since it is a student organization. I am glad they
are having the ceremony, but I think that should be good enough. I
think they are going to have a student lead a prayer but it will not
be on the program.

Back in 1983, my high school made the decision that the Bacchalaureate
(basically, a graduation religious service) would become an optional event
and that all religiosity would be eliminated from the Graduation ceremony
itself. Those students who felt they could not graduate without God's
blessing could attend the Bac in cap and gown. Those who did not want to
be preached at could skip it.

In response to the ICLU's letter, FCA (federation of Christian
athletes), a student group is doibg a bac for the first time. They
are doing it at the school, which is fine IMHO since it is not
required. Apparently it is not enough for them, though.

http://www.indystar.com/articles/9/148067-1999-103.html
From the article:
"We should have prayer because most of the seniors want it," said sophomore
Megan Gainey, 16, who will help with the graduation ceremony in the high
school gymnasium. "It should not be taken out because a few people oppose
it."
And here I was thinking that freedom of religion, and separation of church
and state, were included in the US constitution to prevent the majority from
imposing their religion on minorities. Prayer should be taken out of the
ceremony if just *one* student objects.

That't us! I'll let you know. I think there's an attitude among
administrators that the kids should do the dirty work. Since kids
cannot be stopped from randomly praying on their own or starting to
lead a prayer, I think the school is saying "we can't pray, but we
CAN'T STOP YOU FROM PRAYING <wink wink hint hint>"
I will be shocked if there isn't a prayer.
