Promise Keepers |
Does anyone on this group know whatever happened to the Promise Keepers?
They used to be a big deal, lots of publicity and membership apparently.
Now one rarely even hears the name. Do they still exist/

I've a friend who is involved with his church and men's groups. I think
promise keepers have died down but there are a lot of groups that are
modeled on them.
They take the boys camping and the girls shopping....
We don't talk about religion since I gave him a copy of "Who wrote the
bible." but he's made a few comments that the men don't seemed to have
changed much.

This week it was reported that Bill McCartney (former CU football coach)

Today's PK Radio Highlight - Sept. 11, 2003 - From Baltimore 2003
"You're Going the Wrong Way" (Tony Evans - 90 seconds)
Bill McCartneyBill McCartney, Founder of Promise Keepers, Resigns
DENVER, September 9, 2003 - Bill McCartney, president of Promise Keepers (PK) - the
international ministry to men he founded 13 years ago - is resigning effective October 1
to care for his wife and spend more time with his family... Send a note to Coach Mac...
Words of Appreciation
Why are nearly 1,000 men each day registering for "The Challenge" conferences? Because
they are fantastic! God is using PK in powerful ways ... Read what people are saying!
In our August conferences alone, over 5,000 men came forward to give themselves to Jesus
Christ!
THIS WEEK: Dallas, TX (Sep 12-13) is now sold out! Walk-ups are NOT available. If you
registered in the last week, get your wristband at the Registration Help Center on site.
Thank you, Lord. We look forward to what God is going to accomplish as PK returns to the
Lone Star State.
.... more ....

They exist - but they don't come here.
If you use them as your ISP then they will protect your delicate
mind. In particular, they will keep you away from usenet:
: Additionally, pkFamily denies access to Newsgroups. Although
: there are many good Newsgroups, there is also a significant
: number of groups specializing in total smut. Therefore, since
: most users do not need access to Newsgroups, all Newsgroups are
: blocked to be safe.

I was wondering about them myself. I have a feeling when they came
home from the all men's club and declared 'Me Tarzan, you Jane', legs
snapped shut and the club died. Women are much more powerful than
Jeebus.

Thanks to all for the info. Given the current social climate in the US, I'm
a bit surprised that PK isn't flourishing, receiving govt. funds and such.

Yes, PK still exists. They still have conferences and lately, they've launched
conferences geared toward youth.
I've been to many PK events. You can see the notes I took here:

http://www.jcsm.org/PromiseKeepers.htm
"Eskimos catch wolves by freezing 3 coats of goat's blood on a knife.
The wolf licks off the layers of blood until it cuts its tongue, eats
its own blood and kills itself on the knife."
Were you gullible enough to swallow that?
"We are blinder than we think."
You thought it was important enough to write it down. Was it
important enough to consider?
"Don't let your biggest treasure on earth be asphalt in Heaven."
Do you really believe Heaven will have traffic thoroughfares clad in a
soft, dense, yellow metal?
"God didn't give us a spirit of bondage, but a spirit of freedom."
"A servant is a slave to God. It's a godly man's job to be a servant
to God."
Ah yes. So with that putative freedom, we get to freely choose
between enslavement and torture everlasting. Something here doesn't
pass the smell test.
"Childish things are thrown away when we become a godly man."
see Matthew 18:3 and 19:14 (And as we all know, having an invisible
friend isn't childish at all.)
"Being a Christian doesn't make you perfect, but God does give you
divine power."
Let me guess, this "divine power" is utterly indistinguishable from
ordinary human powers to any outside observer. Right?
"1 in 350 married people that are reading the Bible and praying get
divorced."
Did you know that 77.4% of all statistics are just made up?
You might want to look up the actual studies that have been done on
this. (And while you are at it, take a look at how the divorce rate
for atheists compares to the divorce rate for Christians.)
"Part of accepting Jesus is becoming an active member of His body."
Have you become his body's member?
"The people who didn't tithe/give at the Promise Keeper's offering
call were noticeably depressed when we sang the next worship song."
It always comes back to the money, doesn't it? One might think an
omnipotent creator god who can make anything from nothing and can pave
his land with gold wouldn't have need of human coin, but apparently
one would be mistaken in that.
"The cross is an offense to the intellect."
And any reasonable sense of morality, justice, and humanity.
"The enemy wants to destroy the ground we stand on."
That makes them enemies of the ground you stand on. That doesn't mean
they are your enemies.
"Why do we sometimes think the ones trying to help us are trying to
hurt us?"
That's the meme/virus/drug talking. It tells you that any attack on
it is an attack on you.
