"In physical cosmology, dark energy is a hypothetical form of energy
that permeates all of space and has strong negative pressure.[1]
According to the Theory of Relativity, the effect of such a negative
pressure is qualitatively similar to a force acting in opposition to
gravity at large scales. Invoking such an effect is currently the most
popular method for explaining recent observations that the universe
appears to be expanding at an accelerating rate, as well as accounting
for a significant portion of the missing mass in the universe.
Two proposed forms for dark energy are the cosmological constant, a
constant energy density filling space homogeneously,[2] and
quintessence, a dynamic field whose energy density can vary in time
and space.
Nature of dark energy
As this NASA chart indicates, roughly 70 percent or more of the
universe consists of dark energy, about which we know next to
nothing. The exact nature of this dark energy is a matter of

Ummmm....no. And actually, it's Andrew's old Subject: topic.
Dark energy doesn't have to be homogeneous, by the way. There's
some thought afoot of re-visiting a basic principle of colsmolgy,
that the universe itself is homogeneous at very large scales.
That assumption was necessary to make the equations of general
relativity tractable, but observations increasingly indicate
that it may be a bad assumption. In which case, dark energy
may turn out not to be needed at all to explain cosmic
expansion.

Why? If everything runs down, then everything runs down.
In any event, no one ever said that dark energy would reverse
entropy. Precisely the opposite in fact: an expanding universe
with a fixed energy content represents an increase in entropy.
Furthermore, under some theories of dark energy, the rate of expansion
of space will accelerate until even the atoms are torn apart.
Now THAT's what I call increasing entropy.

popular method for explaining recent observations that the universe

entropy.

Why? If everything runs down, then everything runs down. =20

In any event, no one ever said that dark energy would reverse
entropy. Precisely the opposite in fact: an expanding universe
with a fixed energy content represents an increase in entropy.

Furthermore, under some theories of dark energy, the rate of expa=

nsion

of space will accelerate until even the atoms are torn apart.
Now THAT's what I call increasing entropy.

At the Big Bang, the total energy in the universe was concentrated
in a tiny volume. As space expands, that energy disperses; that's
increasing entropy.

As far as conditions before the big bang, as well the question of
whether there will be another...well, here's a quick 500-word essay

Ummmm....no. And actually, it's Andrew's old Subject: topic.

Dark energy doesn't have to be homogeneous, by the way. Ther=

some thought afoot of re-visiting a basic principle of colsmo=

that the universe itself is homogeneous at very large scales.
That assumption was necessary to make the equations of general

may turn out not to be needed at all to explain cosmic
expansion.

Atheists do not believe about the existence or non-existence of God. God
