Some atheists also seem to also hate free speech.

Professor Forced Out for Citing George Washington
A tenured college professor is set to be fired for simply sending out an
e-mail to colleagues containing George Washingtonıs "Thanksgiving Day
Proclamation of 1789.²
Already professor Walter Kehowski at Glendale Community College in Arizona
has been placed on forced administrative leave and the schoolıs chief has
recommended his termination.
"It simply boggles the mind that a professor could find himself facing
termination simply for e-mailing the Thanksgiving address of our first
president,² said Greg Lukianoff, president of the Foundation for
Individual Rights in Education (FIRE).
On Nov. 22, 2006, the day before Thanksgiving, Kehowski, a professor in
mathematics in the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) sent
the e-mail containing Washingtonıs message to all MCCCD employees, using a
district-wide service designated for "announcements.²
Story Continues Below
Within weeks, five MCCCD employees filed harassment charges against
Kehowski, claiming his message was "hostile² and "derogatory.² They
complaining employees also cited the fact that the e-mail contained a link
to Pat Buchananıs Web site, where Kehowski had found Washingtonıs
proclamation. Buchanan, a conservative commentator, had also posted to his
Web site criticisms of immigration policies.
On Jan. 3, 2007, MCCCD found that Kehowski was guilty of violating
policies limiting e-mail usage to messages that "support education,
research, scholarly communication, administration, and other MCCCD
business.²
These policies also prohibit "mailings to large numbers of people that
contain unwanted solicitations or information.²
However, MCCCD employees commonly use the "announcements² service to send
out unsolicited information, according to a statement from FIRE.
On March 9, MCCCD Chancellor Rufus Glasper placed Kehowski on
administrative leave and recommended to the MCCCD governing board that he
be dismissed. Kehowski has since appealed that decision and will defend
himself at a hearing before a panel of three faculty members on June 5.
Kehowski contacted FIRE for help, and FIRE wrote to Glasper on April 25 to
protest the actions against Kehowski, asserting that e-mailing a
proclamation from George Washington or including a link to Pat Buchananıs
Web site does not constitute punishable harassment.
FIRE reminded Glasper that the U.S. Supreme Court has held that for
workplace expression to be considered "harassment,² it must be "severe or
pervasive enough to create an objectively hostile or abusive work
environment.²
Sending a link to a Web site, which readers can either visit or simply
ignore, does not fit this standard, FIRE maintains.
Glasper responded with a letter on April 30, but failed to address any of
FIREıs concerns, according to the groupıs statement.
"It is dark day for free speech and common sense in Arizona,² Lukianoff said.
"If the MCCCD believes at all in the importance of the right to free
expression, or even just in basic fairness, it will undo its illiberal
actions and exonerate professor Kehowski immediately.
"This situation is an embarrassment to MCCCD and would be laughable if a
professorıs most basic rights and very livelihood werenıt on the line.²

You would have the read the article. George Washington speech's was
related to his love of God. It's my opinion that the atheists that
complained about the speech were upset because they did not want to
receive email messages about God so they wanted to get the professor fired
that sent them the email. Here is the speech that made the atheists so

You left out that the professor also had a link to an evangelical web

views, so you object to their right to be free of evangelizing.

Matt,
If I was a professor at a college and received an email from a fellow
professor that was an atheist and was a member of an atheist
organization--I would not start a campaign to get that professor fired
even if the message was offensive to me. I believe in free speech.
How about if the professor was pushing Satanism? And I will remind you
that good Christians have pushed for Wiccans to be fired from schools.
I would not be offended by the emails. If I was a teacher in a state high

What are you trying to accomplish by saying that? Some atheists hate

Thanksgiving Proclamation

By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation.
Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of
Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and
humbly to implore his protection and favor-- and whereas both Houses of
Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the
People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be

establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.
Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November
next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that
great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good
that was, that is, or that will be-- That we may then all unite in
rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks--for his kind care and
protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a
Nation--for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable
interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and
conclusion of the late war--for the great degree of tranquility, union,
and plenty, which we have since enjoyed--for the peaceable and rational
manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of
government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One
now lately instituted--for the civil and religious liberty with which we
are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful
knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he
hath been pleased to confer upon us.
and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and
supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to
pardon our national and other transgressions-- to enable us all, whether
in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties
properly and punctually--to render our national government a blessing to
all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and
constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed--to
protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have
shewn kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and
concord--To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and
virtue, and the encrease of science among them and us--and generally to
grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone
knows to be best.

are. Do you _have_ a point?

Go: Washington
Precisely the sort of thing an 18th century public man such as
Washington would have said in an 18th century public place on an 18th
century public occasion in response to an 18th century public request
that a day of thanksgiving be proclaimed. Gentlemen back then set
great store in the distinction between the public and the private
life--a distinction we have all but lost when salesmen and other
riff-raff are instantly on a first-name basis with you. The fact that
other faculty objected says more about their cultural ignorance than
it does about their atheism (as does your bringing it up as though it
were some sort of reliable touchstone of atheistic character), but
what the hell--the place is only a junior college, after all. One must
not expect too much of it.
Incidentally, in his private life, Washington probably rogered more
women to whom he was not married than Bill Clinton, but 18th century
gentlemen would not have been ruffled at that activity; they would
have been absolutely horrified, however, at anyone attempting to make
a public issue of the rogering. Only a cad would stoop to do such a
thing.

There are always people who will hate and ridicule. It works both ways.
I personally don't like other people telling me what I should belief, nor in

The professor appeared on a television news show. I saw the interview. He
said the professors that complained were outspoken atheists.
So he said that they were. That does not mean that they actually are. Do we
KNOW that they were ALL outspoken atheists? Do we know that that is why
they complained?
He also said
that several other atheist professors told him that they were NOT offended
by his email or the speech.
There you go.
I am Christian and I had to deal with college
professors that were atheists.
Heaven forbid.. how did you survive such a terrible ordeal? :)
Some of them were seemed to hate Christians
and others treated me the same way he treated atheist.
You mean that a human being can treat anoth human being as a human being ..
and not drag into it whether that person is atheist or theist? Its a shame
that doesn't happen more often.
They were wonderful people.
There are wonderful people, there are not-so-wonderful people. Atheism or
Theism doesn't seem to have much bearing on that.
I learned that SOME atheists do have a deep hate for Christians
and even rediculed Christian students.
There are always people who will hate and ridicule. It works both ways.
I personally don't like other people telling me what I should belief, nor in
telling ther to belief things as proven facts when they are not (ie lies).
However, other professors would
NEVER redicule Christians and would not disrespect Christians.
That's how it should be
Believe it or not, we are in agreement on most issues. Regardless of who
does it, rediculing students is wrong. I did learn something important
from the professor that rediculed other Christians and myself. I have
heard black people explain the prejudice they had to deal with but I could
not relate to what they were saying. As a result of my experience with the
atheist professor, I can better relate to what they mean. Of course, what
they have had to deal with in terms or prejudice and redicule is MUCH
worse than what I had to deal with.

Some of them didn't make religion an issue, some did.
Ask Mathew Sheppard about dealing with Christians. Let me know what he
says. Few of us would trust Christians restrained only by "Christian
love".

People in general do not know what wickedness there is in this pretended
Word of God. Brought up in habits of superstition, they take it for
granted that the Bible is true, and that it is good... Good heavens! it
is quite another thing; it is a book of lies wickedness and blasphemy;
for what can be a greater blasphemy than to ascribe the wickedness of man
to the orders of the Almighty?
