Professor Forced Out for Citing George Washington
A tenured college professor is set to be fired for simply sending out an
e-mail to colleagues containing George Washingtonıs "Thanksgiving Day
Proclamation of 1789.²
Already professor Walter Kehowski at Glendale Community College in Arizona
has been placed on forced administrative leave and the schoolıs chief has
recommended his termination.
"It simply boggles the mind that a professor could find himself facing
termination simply for e-mailing the Thanksgiving address of our first
president,² said Greg Lukianoff, president of the Foundation for
Individual Rights in Education (FIRE).
On Nov. 22, 2006, the day before Thanksgiving, Kehowski, a professor in
mathematics in the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) sent
the e-mail containing Washingtonıs message to all MCCCD employees, using a
district-wide service designated for "announcements.²
Story Continues Below
Within weeks, five MCCCD employees filed harassment charges against
Kehowski, claiming his message was "hostile² and "derogatory.² They
complaining employees also cited the fact that the e-mail contained a link
to Pat Buchananıs Web site, where Kehowski had found Washingtonıs
proclamation. Buchanan, a conservative commentator, had also posted to his
Web site criticisms of immigration policies.
On Jan. 3, 2007, MCCCD found that Kehowski was guilty of violating
policies limiting e-mail usage to messages that "support education,
research, scholarly communication, administration, and other MCCCD
business.²
These policies also prohibit "mailings to large numbers of people that
contain unwanted solicitations or information.²
However, MCCCD employees commonly use the "announcements² service to send
out unsolicited information, according to a statement from FIRE.
On March 9, MCCCD Chancellor Rufus Glasper placed Kehowski on
administrative leave and recommended to the MCCCD governing board that he
be dismissed. Kehowski has since appealed that decision and will defend
himself at a hearing before a panel of three faculty members on June 5.
Kehowski contacted FIRE for help, and FIRE wrote to Glasper on April 25 to
protest the actions against Kehowski, asserting that e-mailing a
proclamation from George Washington or including a link to Pat Buchananıs
Web site does not constitute punishable harassment.
FIRE reminded Glasper that the U.S. Supreme Court has held that for
workplace expression to be considered "harassment,² it must be "severe or
pervasive enough to create an objectively hostile or abusive work
environment.²
Sending a link to a Web site, which readers can either visit or simply
ignore, does not fit this standard, FIRE maintains.
Glasper responded with a letter on April 30, but failed to address any of
FIREıs concerns, according to the groupıs statement.
"It is dark day for free speech and common sense in Arizona,² Lukianoff said.
"If the MCCCD believes at all in the importance of the right to free
expression, or even just in basic fairness, it will undo its illiberal
actions and exonerate professor Kehowski immediately.
"This situation is an embarrassment to MCCCD and would be laughable if a
professorıs most basic rights and very livelihood werenıt on the line.²

It's common sense. Christians and even most NON Christians would not have
been offended by anything that was written by George Washington.
Seeing as how you are not in Phoenix, I can pretty much assume you've
never set foot on the GCC campus.
Well, I have. You are wrong. There are a number of vocal ethnic groups
on campus that would have taken offense at this mass mailing. Till you
can show otherwise that it WAS atheists involved, I will place bets it
was probably one of the other groups.
The professor appeared on a television news show. I saw the interview. He
said the professors that complained were outspoken atheists.
What did you expect him to say? Did he provide any evidence for his
assertion
He also said
that several other atheist professors told him that they were NOT offended
by his email or the speech. I am Christian and I had to deal with college
professors that were atheists.
It seems that the experience scarred you for life. Now you consider
anyone who disagrees with you to be an "atheist." I guess it's more
respectable than considering them "heretics" or "Martians."
Some of them were seemed to hate Christians
and others treated me the same way he treated atheist. They were wonderful
people. I learned that SOME atheists do have a deep hate for Christians
and even rediculed Christian students.
Most Christians are decent people who just walk their faith. Others are
obnoxious about their religion, trying to force it on others,
denigrating other religions and preaching hellfire and damnation for
anyone who disagrees with them. They get what they deserve.
However, other professors would
NEVER redicule Christians and would not disrespect Christians.
Inappropriately...
Here's the
speech that made those professors so upset. You are correct. I have not
visited that campus.
I'm not an atheist, and I would be offended if a colleague sent that to
me. I would be offended because he was probably hijacking the words of a
great liberator to his own sectarian ends. He should not desecrate
Washington's words in this fashion.

manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of
government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One
now lately instituted--for the civil and religious liberty with which we
are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful
knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he
hath been pleased to confer upon us.
and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and
supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to
pardon our national and other transgressions-- to enable us all, whether
in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties
properly and punctually--to render our national government a blessing to
all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and
constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed--to
protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have
shewn kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and
concord--To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and
virtue, and the encrease of science among them and us--and generally to
grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone
knows to be best.
Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in

The professor was interviewed on a television news show. He said that the
message in his email was written by George Washington and Washinton's
message discussed God and Washington's love for God. He stated in the
interview that the professors that were upset were outspoken atheists.
They don't like working with Christian professors. When I was in college,
there was only one Christian professor in the science department. It was
my impression that the other science professors did not like him or
associate with him.
Follow up--your email was the reason that I wanted to read the speech.
This is the speech that was the reason the professor was fired.
Thanksgiving Proclamation
[New York, 3 October 1789]
Page Image.
By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation.
Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of
Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and
humbly to implore his protection and favor-- and whereas both Houses of
Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the
People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be
observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of
Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to
establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.
Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November
next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that
great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good
that was, that is, or that will be-- That we may then all unite in
rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks--for his kind care and
protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a
Nation--for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable
interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and
conclusion of the late war--for the great degree of tranquility, union,
and plenty, which we have since enjoyed--for the peaceable and rational
manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of
government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One
now lately instituted--for the civil and religious liberty with which we
are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful
knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he
hath been pleased to confer upon us.
and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and
supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to
pardon our national and other transgressions-- to enable us all, whether
in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties
properly and punctually--to render our national government a blessing to
all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and
constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed--to
protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have
shewn kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and
concord--To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and
virtue, and the encrease of science among them and us--and generally to
grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone
knows to be best.

Go: Washington
Wow! That's very inspiring. For a minute I forgot I was an atheist. And of
course Geo. Washington was not too concerned about the fate of the Heathen
Natives, since they had not accepted Christ, and were mostly wiped out by
smallpox do to the sinful lack of the immunity that Europeans had developed
through Natural Selection and Knowledge of how to avoid infection.

Well there you go then, he was being a deliberate and ignorant jerk! A
bit like certain christian tossers who insist on posting their
'messages' to a.a
I'd have complained too, it's an abuse of his company email system.

Sure sounds like that original professor was trying to use the college
email system to promote his religion. Would you mind professors using
the email system to promote atheism? How about promoting Satanism?

campaign to get a professor fired.

It was a small college. I talked to the Christian Biology professor in his
office. He was an expert on evolution and was an advocate of creation
science. It was a Christian college but several of the professors were
atheists but they did not appear to me to hate Christians. I attended a
state college to get my Master's Degree. That is where I had to take a
class from an atheist psychology professor that appeared to hate
Christians. One of the Christian students dropped out of the program
because of that atheist professor. How would you feel if a Christian
professor rediculed an atheist student? In both cases---it's wrong for
professors to redicule students because of their religions or because they
are atheist.

There's a big difference between "appeared to hate
Christians" (presumably because you could read his mind) and
"ridiculed". Provide an example of this "ridicule". I find it odd
that the professor who supposedly asked Christian students to raise
their hands was not a professor of yours and, in fact, the only reason
you claim that it happened at all is because a friend of yours
(obviously also a Christian) said that it happened. Frankly, what I
am seeing here is evidence that Christians hate atheists and no
evidence that atheists hate Christians.

Professor Forced Out for Citing George Washington
A tenured college professor is set to be fired for simply sending out an
e-mail to colleagues containing George Washingtonıs "Thanksgiving Day
Proclamation of 1789.²
This is a deceptive summation of the facts. He also included a link to
an evangelical website. It was clearly an attempt to evangelize. Lots
of people object to evangelizing. I know that you are sure that you
have the best answer and I bet you can't understand why others are not
welcoming your attempts to change their minds.
