are barely a minute fraction of Judaism, ignored by most Jews,

That one's easy. Jews are ugly and are jealous of "Aryan" good looks
It's mass self-loathing. My mother was very good looking, but never
read a book, so she was religious, and never questioned herself or her
beliefs. She always believed that God saved her from the Holocaust. I
kept telling her that her "Aryan" good looks probably had more to do
with it than any God, but she was impenetrable. People who hate
themselves and read too much become malcontents, commies, renegades,
etc. They really want to annihilate themselves and the curse of their
"Jewishness." By the way, it is said that Hitler was insane because of
his fear of some possible "Jewish blood" that he thought many have
given him his wide nose. He wanted to kill everything Jewish, if only
to kill what little possible Jew blood within that may have corrupted
his "Aryan" self.

Good question. IMO there are a number possible reasons.
First, as the saying goes, two Jews, three opinions. We do disagree. And
we also have a tradition of backing up our beliefs with sources in
Tanach, in Talmud, in the many commentaries upon commentaries upon
commentaries, and so on.
Second, ethics is a major part of our faith. Torah includes substantial
texts on ethics and responsibility to others. Even our mystical
tradition includes the concept of mending the Universe. So we are
opinionated, idealistic and concerned about making things right.
Third, we are free to disagree among ourselves, and we are encouraged to
question everything. All opinions, no matter how flaky get heard.
Then we are a minority, one with a long history of being outcasts. There
are a number forces at work within Judaism because of this. First there
is the drive to remain Jewish to retain the "fence around the Torah" as
our ancient sages put it. This drives the tradition of separateness.
Many of the rules of kashrut (keeping Kosher), the different Sabbath,
and others are designed to require separation. Second is to be like
everyone else, just to be accepted for what we are. We will be
different, but not TOO different. Third is the drive to assimilate, to
become just like everyone else. There are jokes about this, but they
reflect the pain of being other. Ironically we resist persecution and
discrimination very well, but acceptance does us in. There were Jewish
enclaves in China in past centuries, but there are not now, because the
Jews were accepted by the locals, eventually intermarried and were
swallowed up. The bigots are doubly stupid in their persecutions: first
because of their stupid intolerance, and second because it only makes us
stronger, more independent minded and smarter.
So all these forces are at work. The Satmars allege textual support for
their positions, but the rest of the Jewish world has other views of the
same texts. They want just to live their lives, but like Neville
Chamberlain they attempt appeasement. This doesn't work, as we know to
our cost. We have our flakes just like everyone else.
Noam Chomsky probably has several of these drivers at work. He is
probably ambivalent about his religion, maybe desiring more
assimilation. He questions, he has ethical standards and he is
articulate. He is not pragmatic, any more than the Satmars.
These two examples come across as self-hating, but mainly lack pragmatism.

Good question. IMO there are a number possible reasons.
First, as the saying goes, two Jews, three opinions. We do disagree. And
we also have a tradition of backing up our beliefs with sources in
Tanach, in Talmud, in the many commentaries upon commentaries upon
commentaries, and so on.
Second, ethics is a major part of our faith. Torah includes substantial
texts on ethics and responsibility to others. Even our mystical
tradition includes the concept of mending the Universe. So we are
opinionated, idealistic and concerned about making things right.
Hence heavy involvement of Jews within the civil rights movement....etc
etc...
Third, we are free to disagree among ourselves, and we are encouraged to
question everything. All opinions, no matter how flaky get heard.
Then we are a minority, one with a long history of being outcasts. There
are a number forces at work within Judaism because of this. First there
is the drive to remain Jewish to retain the "fence around the Torah" as
our ancient sages put it. This drives the tradition of separateness.
Many of the rules of kashrut (keeping Kosher), the different Sabbath,
and others are designed to require separation. Second is to be like
everyone else, just to be accepted for what we are. We will be
different, but not TOO different. Third is the drive to assimilate, to
become just like everyone else. There are jokes about this, but they
reflect the pain of being other. Ironically we resist persecution and
discrimination very well, but acceptance does us in. There were Jewish
enclaves in China in past centuries, but there are not now, because the
Jews were accepted by the locals, eventually intermarried and were
swallowed up.
But that never happened in India, there remains Jewish Indians...
Also, I thought that there were, up to WW2, Jewish enclaves still in
China.... and were spared by Japanese soldiers...
The bigots are doubly stupid in their persecutions: first
because of their stupid intolerance, and second because it only makes us
stronger, more independent minded and smarter.
So all these forces are at work. The Satmars allege textual support for
their positions, but the rest of the Jewish world has other views of the
same texts. They want just to live their lives, but like Neville
Chamberlain they attempt appeasement. This doesn't work, as we know to
our cost. We have our flakes just like everyone else.
Noam Chomsky probably has several of these drivers at work. He is
probably ambivalent about his religion, maybe desiring more
assimilation. He questions, he has ethical standards and he is
articulate.
I wouldn't say that he has ethical standards.....
He is not pragmatic, any more than the Satmars.
These two examples come across as self-hating, but mainly lack pragmatism.
