What I underlined when reading his essay "The False World of
Television News" on 67-73 is herein:
To regain some balance in the sympathy we apportion to
those who suffer, we must become conscious of our
natural tendency to care more about the suffering of those
whom we see, and consciously sensitize ourselves to
concern ourselves with the suffering of those whom we
cannot see. One way to begin achieving this is by not
relying on television news, especially of international
events. The more one relies on television for one's
perceptions of the world and its evils, the more skewed
one's perceptions of human suffering will be.
....TV... is antiperspective.
....it is hard to videotape freedom. On the other hand,
video is perfect for riots....
When was the last time a Syrian, Iraqi, or Libyan publicly
attacked one of his or her leaders? But television news
cannot, or at least does not, report what people do _not_
do. One can videotape riots, but not people who are
afraid to speak out.
.... When it comes to international-- and now, with its
reliance on sound bites, even domestic-- events,
television news can be worse than worthless: Those who
rely on it to understand the world have distorted
perceptions, news-wise and morally.

First, the impact of television news, and to a lesser extent
radio news, is awesome, even frightening. What became
apparent in this [just-described] situation was the
medium's ability to influence people's perceptions and
conduct _more than reality itself_. People were more
affected by what television told them than by what they

is not exciting enough, and thus they need media
excitement-- even concerning the weather.

since television is only interested in greater profits--
which come about through the creation of more addicts--
the problem of TV hype won't solve itself. The best

Unfortunately, for most people that is as difficult as it is
for an alcoholic to stop drinking.

Television news provides entertainment but claims to
transmit reality. Hence, it often does real harm.
