Proseytizing, both ways? |
After reading alt atheism for a while, I have noticed how many Christians
regularly come to this group to try and argue for religion, convert
atheists, etc.
Do any of the regular atheists on this group do the same in religious
groups? Do you go to other newsgroups to try and show them that their
religion is wrong?

Not me. I stick with alt.atheism, alt.athiesm, talk.atheism,
alt.christnet.atheism. But then again, if someone starts out by
crossposting, I don't trim headers either in my response.

Having read this NG for nigh unto 8 years, I seems that the general attitude
among atheists is that the act of going to religious NGs to proselytize
atheism is frowned on. This is not to say that it doesn't happen.
I don't like it when people push religion onto me, so I don't push my
non-religion onto others.

In the past I've seen people on religious newsgroups trying to convince
adherents that their belief system was wrong. I'm not sure, though, if the
ones I've seen were arguing on behalf of atheism, or on the behalf of some
other religious group that thought they were the only right belief.

According to www.dictionary.com, this is the word's etymology:
Proselytize is formed from proselyte, "a new convert,
especially a convert to some religion or religious
sect, or to some particular opinion, system, or party,"
from Greek proselutos, "a proselyte, a newcomer," from
pros, "toward" + elutos, from eluthon, "I came."
Since atheism is not an opinion, system, or party, but rather
an absence of them, I have not "proselytized". Those who have
entered religious groups to tell them they're whacked in the
head have not proselytized either, just for the record.
If you mean deliberately going where I'm not wanted to try
and change people's minds, then no. (But proselytizers will
not go without being challenged if they invade _my_ space.)
Religion is ideology, not fact; xians who proselytize are no
different than fascists or communist, but instead are simply
(and simplemindedly) trying to impose a set of rules on
people who choose not to live by them.

Yeah, this joint is infested with them. And other pests as well.

I don't in newsgroups that are, by charter, specifically religious.
I do push back when nonreligious newsgroups are in danger of being taken over
by overtly religious people.
Do you go to other newsgroups to try and show them that their
religion is wrong?
I don't *go* to a newsgroup for that purpose. As above, I do push back in the
nonreligious newsgroups I regularly frequent.

Some do. I have never gone to a Christian group for such a purpose.

Proselytize no. I do lurk/post in a couple but if I post it is mostly
to correct an error of fact or to just talk (a few of the religous
groups are quite reasonable and one hands out jelly babies).
Note that we have had christians here who are interested in
discussion.

I've known of a few who go beard the christians in their dens. But not
many.
Almost all crossposting is started from the outside...

I used to go to some and post spoof posts for a bit of a laugh (like how long an
ascending jesus will take to reach the edge of the known universe).
Unfortunately they kept taking me seriously, so I gave up. They don't seem to be
able to tell the difference between wind ups and the genuine article.

I don't. In my opinion, preaching to people who didn't ask to hear it is
just rude. It doesn't help public perception of atheists, and what's more,
it doesn't work. I've never seen a person convert either one way or the
other as the result of such invasive proselytizing; I'm fairly confident
it's never happened in the entire history of Usenet. However, if a
proselytizer invades this group and crossposts threads into religious
groups, I will follow the discussion back to wherever it propagates.

I am often tempted to payback in kind for unwanted proselytizing. After
all, these people are coming into my turf and telling me that I need to
believe in xyz... The only thing that keeps me from actually doing it
is that I know it would be a huge waste of time. They won't stop
preaching to me and I won't be able to stop them from being idiots.
