I agree. Prostitutes' wages would add to the local tax base, and we'd
be able to arrange to track them medically like they do in The
Netherlands.

Plus, it would save the health of most prostitutes
and their stupid johns. And it would end a lot of
drug addiction and alcoholism.
Of course, the fundies would be totally against this,
since they believe that prostitutes and the people
that buy their services deserve any suffering they
go through as a result of such services.

I've got the impression that the fundies feel this way about the
prostitutes, but not the men who use their services. The men get
clucked at for a few moments, then they get all the sympathy and
forgiveness in the world.
The poor workin' girls, on the other hand, well, they deserve to get
what's comin' to them....

Of course, before modern medicine found the cures for
venereal diseases, once the men got to the final stages
of, say, syphillis, the family would find ways of hiding
old dad, brother, cousin Rob or Uncle Bob away from
everyone's sight. The prostitute, on the other hand,
would land in the charity hospital in a room with at
least twenty other people and die horribly.

The fundies ARE the men who use the prostitutes' services. Those who
don't use the services of other men.

There are some loopholes that have been viciously attacked in court.
One is just calling a whorehouse a "Church of Sex" which I think
should be allowed, but the IRS struck down, because they know the
whole church thing of section 501 is on completely arbitrary ground
and don't want people to figure that out. The other is if a camera is
going, it is no longer prostitution, but now legally can be called
custom porn production.

It's funny, but I once heard an extended interview with a person who
claimed to head a prostitute's "union" in California. The union was
against legalization because then they'd have to pay taxes and be put
under government strictures. I think the logic was something like
"even a girl who has the clap still has to work," and "taxes would
drive up prices and eat into our income."

I feel the same way about contracting. I should be allowed to murder
people for money with no government interference.

Well, the prostitute's logic -- which I think she arrived at
intuitively -- is pure Libertarianism. Without reducio (although it's
so absurd it seems like one), Milton Friedman, in his "Right to
Choose," argues against licensing doctors or drugs with the logic that
the free market will separate out the good from the bad (presumably
over a heap of bodies). No so different from the Prostitute unionist
with her attitude that the john puts up his money and takes his
chances.

I think they're obliged to pay taxes anyway. Some years ago a Lindy
St. Claire tried to take the Inland Revenue to court claiming they'd
be living off immoral earnings if they taxed her. She lost and ended
up owing GBP 50,000, IIRC.
Mind you, I suppose if you keep your head down, so to speak, the
chances of being caught by the taxman is fairly remote...

It is a victimless crime that hurts no-one whatsoever.
Amy society that criminalises prostitution is a sick one.
