Prowling alligator nabbed in Pottstown
The four-feet reptile, spotted by a mail carrier, was probably a pet.

Bobby Kish often hears the click of animal feet on macadam when he
delivers morning newspapers in the Pottstown area. Typically, he'll turn
just in time to see the back end of a fox or a deer.
But at 5 a.m. Monday, the sound was distinctively different. Kish, who
had gotten out of his truck to retrieve a misthrown paper, was walking
between two parked cars when he saw a 4-foot alligator.
"He kind of lunged at me and hissed," said Kish, 46. "His mouth was
open; I was about five feet away. It was enough to get my attention."
Kish, who vacations in Florida, knows an alligator when he sees one. He
got back into his truck - he delivers the Pottstown Mercury, which first
reported the encounter - worrying about what would happen if a
neighborhood child encountered the gator.
"Hey, Mom, there's an alligator out here," the kid would yell, Kish
recalled thinking. "Yeah, right, Johnny," the mom would answer.
Kish had to tell somebody. He made a beeline for the Pottstown Borough
police station and told the dispatcher he had seen an alligator on
Prince near Rice Street in Pottstown's West End.
The dispatcher considered very carefully and said, "An alligator?" Kish
said yes. The dispatcher put out the word on the radio. Officers went to
the scene, where, with Kish's help, they found the creature.
Cpl. Jamie O'Neill, no stranger to The Crocodile Hunter on cable TV,
grabbed the alligator from behind, quickly sealing its jaws with duct
tape. The prisoner was placed in the patrol wagon and transported to
lockup, where he was logged into Cell 3 as "Al E. Gator" and monitored
by video camera.
Capt. Allan Ewing, awakened by officers and asked how to deal with the
reptile, said the borough's animal handler had arranged for the gator to
go to a private animal facility near Wilkes-Barre. By 9:05 a.m., it was
gone.
Capt. Ewing said he believed the gator was someone's pet, released when
it became too big to handle. "It didn't walk here from Florida," he
said.
The Humane Society of the United States warned that alligators, which
are dangerous and unpredictable, can grow to 12 feet and shouldn't be
kept as pets.
"They belong in the wild, not in our homes and basements," said
executive vice president Michael Markarian.
Kish, contacted at his day job as a maintenance worker at the East Penn
School District near Allentown, was relieved that officers had found the
gator, right where he said it would be.
Otherwise, they would have thought "I had to be out of my mind," he
said.

What's with the Alligators? There is another thread about an Alligator
who tried to get in someone's front door. Plus there have been about
three or four attacks in Florida in the past few months. What gives?

I haven't been reading the paper lately, but after the amount of rain
Houston got this week, there's usually several articles about alligators
entering subdivisions and eating pets, attacking homeowners and what
not, so there should be still more sightings reported soon.

I was wondering if climate change might have something to do with food
supply in there normal habitats. Of course, as we keep on building one
new subdivision after another we are invading the animals territory so
more encounters are likely.
