Help Us Put an End to Broadcast Indecency
THE ISSUE
It is a violation of Federal law to broadcast obscene or indecent
programming. Obscene speech is not protected by the First Amendment and
cannot be broadcast at any time.
The default setting for broadcast television used to be family-oriented,
while those desiring edgier, more explicit fare were free to seek it out.
Today's prime time television programming has become almost uniformly
unsuitable for families, and often directly hostile to their values, making
it very difficult for parents to shield their children and seek out
alternative entertainment.
Shows airing on broadcast television use the public airwaves. Because
broadcast channels are available free over the air, it is assumed that
children of any age can access their programming, and during prime time, it
is presumed that they are doing so. According to the Communications Act of
1934, which sets the guidelines for the use of this public property,
programming must be in the "public interest," i.e., serve a common publicly
recognized good. It has never been supposed by the Supreme Court that
broadcasters have an absolute right to air whatever they wish with no
responsibility to the public interest.

So you would do away with free speech, and the free enterprise

No. But it would put lots of companies for compensation out of business,
imo.
I do not think it would be necessary for the gov't to shut down
cable/satellite programs if they made all television free again.

Man, you have one hell of an agenda to follow!

Lumber prices should fall. Disposable incomes would rise.
If satellite and cable television were free you might actually see more
people with more disposable income and some lower commodity prices.
It would be anti-inflationary, imo.
Does Freedom of the Press enable newspapers/magazines to publish at a fee or
not?
But it couldn't be totally classified as free speech.
The internet is here, so how would we fund online news?
Currently, the FCC gets a big part of its budget on the monthly bill, if not
all of their budget.
We could use those fees to report news online rather than for porno for
profit operations. A person could opt out if you they did not want access
and avoid the fee.
It does seem like it would be a large restructuring of part of the nation's
activities.
People could still hand out their own literature at no charge.
We see lots of that already in the 'junk mail' area.
Oral speech could never be taxed.
It would take some time to transition to a totally free speech society
unless someone enforced that no speech could be sold.
Publication would not be banned.
Does that seem any more or less autocratic than what we have now?
I might actually stay away from this for a while, but it would be welcome
news to the public if satellite and cable tv were to be free here.
This one is a tough one, imo.

Help Us Put an End to Broadcast Indecency

THE ISSUE

It is a violation of Federal law to broadcast obscene or
indecent programming. Obscene speech is not protected by the
First Amendment and cannot be broadcast at any time.

I think Christianity is obscene.

Didn't you say people can simply change the channel or turn off
the television?

Which we do, however if J Young wants to "put an end to
broadcast indecency", we should start with his indecency.

Do you understand, even a little?

Maybe we should start with allowing Free Speech and by ending
speech that people pay for being treated as if it is free.

So you would do away with free speech, and the free enterprise
system?

No. But it would put lots of companies for compensation out of
business, imo.
I do not think it would be necessary for the gov't to shut down
cable/satellite programs if they made all television free again.

Man, you have one hell of an agenda to follow!

Lumber prices should fall. Disposable incomes would rise.
If satellite and cable television were free you might actually see
more people with more disposable income and some lower commodity
prices.

Wait, are you saying that cable isn't free? LOL!

You get yours for free?

Of course, doesn't everyone?

Would you tell us how you get yours free?
I am sure the entire public would like to know this 'inside' legal

Well yeah, there are ways of purchasing stock that are commonly referred to
as subscriptions. Basically, you purchase so many shares up front, then
every year agree to purchase an agreed number of additional share for an
agreed number months or years or however the issuing company does business.
When a subscription becomes due, you purchase the set number of shares. If
you default there are some monetary penalties involved, which basically
means that the company can exercise the option of purchasing the shares that
you currently hold back at like $.75 cents on the dollar, or you have to
pay them an agreed upon dollar amount if you have sold or traded the stock
you've already purchased, which you can do, usually at a profit.

Let me know when you've completed step 1 and I'll tell you step 2.

Price restraint on free speech.

Nope. You are still free to speak. There's nothing in the constitution
guaranteeing you a media source beyond the range of your own voice.

This one is a tough one, imo.-

Which we do, however if J Young wants to "put an end to broadcast
indecency", we should start with his indecency.
Do you understand, even a little?

Maybe we should start with allowing Free Speech and by ending speech
that people pay for being treated as if it is free.

So you would do away with free speech, and the free enterprise
system?

This one is a tough one, imo.-

HAVE YOU COMPLETELY LOST YOUR MIND, MAN???? Jesus Fucking Christ!

You seem to be making the assumption that he once had
one to lose.
That's never been something in evidence, though.

THE ISSUE

It is a violation of Federal law to broadcast obscene or indecent
programming. Obscene speech is not protected by the First Amendment
and cannot be broadcast at any time.

I think Christianity is obscene.

television?

That's what they say, every time this comes up. And it's sensible,
unlike the cristianban's propoganda otherwise.

Yes, but he wasn't saying that it should be banned from the airwaves.

A good start would be to take away your internet access and clear the
airwaves of all religious broadcasting.

Um, wrong.

Tough.
Seeing only the television that you like is not a
right. Suck it up and do something else instead of
trying to force everybody to submit to your wants.

Shows airing on broadcast television use the public airwaves. Because
broadcast channels are available free over the air, it is assumed that
children of any age can access their programming, and during prime time, it
is presumed that they are doing so.

Maybe parents should take more responsibility for their
children - you know, actually do the job right instead
of whining about how not everybody will do what they want?

According to the Communications Act of
1934, which sets the guidelines for the use of this public property,
programming must be in the "public interest," i.e., serve a common publicly
recognized good. It has never been supposed by the Supreme Court that
broadcasters have an absolute right to air whatever they wish with no
responsibility to the public interest.
