Pseudo Christians Foments Atheism |
Christendom’s popes and clergy bewail the upsurge of atheism, and many
use it to justify their support of right-wing politics. Yet, the
question has to be asked: Who condoned the injustices and inequalities
that fomented this rise of atheism, particularly in the last century? It
occurred in an outstanding way in the realm of Christendom. For example,
the Russian Orthodox Church had consorted with the czars, who had
cruelly oppressed the people. The lack of true Christian values on the
part of those who presented themselves as representatives of God
contributed to conditions that formed a breeding ground for atheism.

You seem to misunderstand the reason behind people becoming atheists.
It is not because of corruption in the theist camp. (That only shows
that their gods have no power to make decent human beings out of them.)
"Deconversions" usually occur after an examination of theist claims and
the conclusion that there is no evidence for them.

Wasn't the Russian Orthodox Church founded by the Czars? And of course
it would buddy up to the Czars, prior relationship notwithstanding.
Churches are political organizations, so it makes sense for them to be
on friendly terms with the ruler.
The lack of true Christian values on the
part of those who presented themselves as representatives of God
contributed to conditions that formed a breeding ground for atheism.
True Christian Values(tm) are the values displayed by a Christian.
Perhaps they're not scriptural, but then again, they probably are,
considering all the various moralities you can pick and choose from.

I'm sure that there are some atheists who are atheists because they=20

But please, I'd like to hear about your kinder, gentler Christianity and =
see if that more attractive view of religion weakens my atheism.

Hardly. Having zero reason to believe in deity is the reason.

That would be surprising. Some believers imagine it would, but would
that change your level of disbelief?

Are you saying that people are able to switch their god-belief, on or off,
according to the political stance of a particular religion?

[Note, I just noticed how widely cross posted this thread is, I never
would have responded otherwise. I'm restricting follow-ups to fewer
groups, removing the Russian-orthodox and JW ones].

No. I am agreeing with the original poster that there are probably some
people who opposed religion as they say it practised and generalized to
belief as a whole. Cognitively people "throw out the baby with the bath
water" all of the time.
However, as I stated in my posting, I do not consider myself among them.
And I even suggested that the original poster was wrong in trying
to "blame" atheism on poorly practice religion. That is we throw out
the baby on its own merits.
