Purity ring -- a stop-sign that's worn on your finger |

Purity ring -- a stop-sign that's worn on your finger
Young people who choose chastity can slip on a symbol of their vow.
The thin silver band that 17-year-old Katie McMunn wears on her finger is a
placeholder. Someday, she hopes, it will be replaced by a wedding ring. In
the meantime it serves as a daily reminder of a vow she made three years ago
to remain chaste until marriage.
"I want to give all of my body to my husband," McMunn says.
She was 14 when she first slipped on the silver band during a program
promoting abstinence for teenagers, in Pittsburgh. The three-hour event,
called the Silver Ring Thing, featured music videos, comedians and speakers
who introduced an idea McMunn had not considered: that somewhere out there,
her as-yet-undiscovered husband was waiting for her. She was so moved she
took her vow and borrowed $10 from a stranger to buy her ring.
McMunn is among tens of thousands of young people who in the past decade
have taken a chastity vow until marriage and slipped on a ring to symbolize
it. Chastity rings, part of the controversial abstinence-only movement in
sex education, are becoming more mainstream. Also known as purity rings,
they are being purchased by college students, members of church youth groups
and abstinence organizations, and couples who are dating but abstaining.
Some are acquired as part of programs such as the Silver Ring Thing, others
are bought independently.
Once sold mainly in Christian gift shops, the rings are now offered by
retailers such as Zales and Amazon.com. And sellers say business is booming.
"We began selling purity and chastity rings in 2002 and saw a dramatic
increase in interest through 2004," Rebecca Roberts, who offers 48 different
styles of purity rings on AppleFieldDirect.com, wrote in an e-mail message.
This year, she says, she is feeling increasing competition from other
retailers.
The growing visibility of purity rings comes amid a long-running controversy
over the promotion of abstinence in sex-education programs for teenagers.
Critics charge that promoting abstinence as a singular virtue means denying
to teenagers the sex education they need. That means that if someone breaks
the chastity vow, he or she will not know how to avoid contracting sexually
transmitted diseases, they say.
Those who wear and promote the rings argue that abstinence is the only way
to practice truly safe sex. And they would like to spread that message far
and wide. In the next seven years, the Silver Ring Thing, a religion-based
group promoting abstinence, aims to persuade 20 percent of the world's youth
to abstain from sex until marriage, says Denny Pattyn, the group's founder.
In the meantime, purity-ring wearers say that they are beginning to change
youth culture, if ever so slightly.

You do understand that follow-up studies have shown that the
Silver Ring program, whatever else it may claim, does not actually
create conditions for abstinence. At best, students who joined the
Silver Ring program put off premarital sex for eighteen months compared
to their peers-- and were less likely to use birth control or STD
prevention techniques when they finally did have sex.

We should note that those joining the Silver Ring program were self
selected and presumably more motivated to keep their virginity in the
first place.

Other studies wrt abstainance programs have also shown people marrying
earlier. It would e interesting to see the divorce rate in this group.

What a joke that is. Most of the teens making these purity vows have no
problem with oral or even anal sex. They believe oral and anal sex are not
really sex at all, so it's okay to do it and still claim chastity. The

Our own nazi turd who writes about "morality " and "decency"... how
ironic!
Besides, only members of the RRRR (retarded retrograd religious

Young people who choose chastity can slip on a symbol of their vow.
Its been noticed that those schools that promote

Purity ring -- a stop-sign that's worn on your finger
Wouldn't it be more effective if worn on the *****, or as a piercing of
the labia? I mean, who's looking at a person's finger when they're
contemplating sex?
** to keep a penis out, the ring would have to fasten to both labia minora.

And, if that doesn't work, through your labia majora.

Purity ring -- a stop-sign that's worn on your finger
Although I don't have the references handy, I seem to recall that there
were reports that the rate of young folks who had these on and decided
that it wasn't for them was very high, more so than the population at
large.
