On another note (heh heh) did anyoe catch the Neil Young Wind Prairie
special from Nashville in the Ryman Auditorium last night on HBO? First
hour was new stuff, then 45 minutes of heaven... Them old geezers are soo
fucking cool and they were great. Young's voice could use a little polish,
but when they did Harvest Moon you didn't need a doob to swoon. Emmy Lou
Harris was one of many people with him, as usual she was amazing.
Neil's a versatile guy.
I have the "Heart of Gold" DVD. Never cared for his country renderings.
OTOH, the video of "Rockin' In The Free World" he did with Pearl Jam is 100%
pure kickass rock. I have it in mpeg and play it all the time.

Loved Greenfield's solo in "Down in the Sewer." Best keyboard

I hate bands that have male singers with pretty voices. Especially
when
they're so high toned they could be girls signing almost. Like Rush or
all those big arena bands of the 70's. I hated them.
It slays me when people think that is hard 'n' heavy rock.
That craps makes me gag.
Hey, don't be dissin' my Rush. They've got one of the best drummers in
rock.
True. Unfortunately they also have one of the most irritating singers
(Geddy Lee) in rock, and Alex Lifeson's guitar tone is nothing to
write home about either...
Irritating is relative. Bob Dylan's voice is like fingernails on a
blackboard
to me. Go figure.
You are probably too young to appreciate Dylan. It's not about his voice.
If you think I'm too young, you're sadly mistaken. I'm 3 years behind you.

It slays me when people think that is hard 'n' heavy rock.

Hey, don't be dissin' my Rush. They've got one of the best drummers

True. Unfortunately they also have one of the most irritating singers

Irritating is relative. Bob Dylan's voice is like fingernails on a

Amazing what he was able to accomplish with it despite it.
I like Bob Dylan, despite his nasal whine. The guy sure can write a

Bifurcation fallacy. :)
Don't get me wrong - Dylan could create an 'atmosphere' with his voice -
but most of his lyrics were self consciously 'clever' or just plain silly
like 'The Times They Are a Changin'". What a joke.
I just don't get why 60's pop music is treated by some as a kind of
'high art' when most of it is only puerile self indulgence - entertaining
and engaging for young people but of little lasting significance.
The test will come when the generation that grew up with that music
(which includes myself BTW) takes their inflated view of its importance
to the grave. Will anyone still care?

& the Jack of Hearts" is like reading a short story. I think his lyrics are
his greatest strengths, because it damn sure isn't his voice.
Funny. I could, back in the Days, enjoy him doing his own songs but I
cant think of a cover that worked for me.
You are right that his voice was ***** - technically speaking - but on
occasion he found a way to use it to better effect than superior
singers singing superior songs. If he can be called a significant
musician it's for that achievement rather than for just the songs.

I hate bands that have male singers with pretty voices.
Especially when
they're so high toned they could be girls signing almost. Like
Rush or
all those big arena bands of the 70's. I hated them.
It slays me when people think that is hard 'n' heavy rock.
That craps makes me gag.
Hey, don't be dissin' my Rush. They've got one of the best
drummers in rock.
True. Unfortunately they also have one of the most irritating
singers
(Geddy Lee) in rock, and Alex Lifeson's guitar tone is nothing to
write home about either...
Irritating is relative. Bob Dylan's voice is like fingernails on a
blackboard
to me. Go figure.
Amazing what he was able to accomplish with it despite it.
I like Bob Dylan, despite his nasal whine. The guy sure can write a
song.

Let me guess - you're a Carpenter's fan?
Bifurcation fallacy. :)
Don't get me wrong - Dylan could create an 'atmosphere' with his voice -
but most of his lyrics were self consciously 'clever' or just plain silly
like 'The Times They Are a Changin'". What a joke.
I just don't get why 60's pop music is treated by some as a kind of
'high art' when most of it is only puerile self indulgence - entertaining
and engaging for young people but of little lasting significance.
YMMV, but I think he's a pretty decent lyricist. Listening to "Lilly
Rosemary
& the Jack of Hearts" is like reading a short story. I think his lyrics
are
his greatest strengths, because it damn sure isn't his voice.

Absolutely 4th Street really nailed how people are.
That's when he could still carry a tune even.
He's become a great guitarrist too.
He did a duet with Willie that was hot hot hot
.

When Jerry Garcia died, he woke up and found himself on a stage on which a
number of instruments were set up. A door offstage opened and in walked Jimi
Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones, John Lennon, Otis Redding and Buddy Holly.
Each musician picked up his favorite instrument and began tuning up.
Jerry walked up to Jimi and said, "Man, so this is what heaven is like."
Jimi looked at him and said, "Heaven? You think this is heaven?"
At that moment, Karen Carpenter walked in, took her seat behind the drums, and
called out, "Okay guys, 'Close to You.' One, two, three, four!"
