Indraprasth (PTI) - A question marks hangs over the
release of the controversial movie The Da Vinci Code,
with the Government saying on Tuesday night it would
allow the film to be screened only after consulting the
Catholic church.
Information and Broadcasting Minister PR Dasmunshi said
he would watch the movie on Wednesday and consult
representatives of the Catholic church before taking a
decision on its release.
"If anything comes which effects their sensibilities, we
will not allow the movie to be screened," he told
reporters here a day ahead of the world premiere of The
Da Vinci Code at the Cannes film festival.
The 125-million-dollar film, considered blasphemous by
Catholic groups around the world, stars Tom Hanks and
Audrey Tautou, and is to be released in India on May 19.
Dasmunshi said he had directed the Censor Board not to
clear the movie before he gets the views of
representatives of the Catholic church. The Government in
Goa, a Christian-majority State, also said it would ask
the Censor Board "either to censor or stop the release"
of the film.
In Mumbai, the Catholic Secular Forum (CSF) which has
been spearheading the campaign against the film in India
said it would approach the High Court for a ban on it.
Dasmunshi said around 300 organisations had sent a
memorandum to him, requesting him to watch the movie
before allowing it to be screened. He alleged "many
forces were at play to create confusion and instability
in the country" in the name of the movie.
On Monday, a five-member panel including former police
commissioner Julio Ribeiro and Father Richard Lane Smith
gave the go-ahead to the movie without advising any cuts
but awarded it an "adult" certificate.
The panel also said Sony Pictures must insert a
disclaimer at the start of the movie stating it was a
work of fiction and not intended to hurt religious
feelings.
