Object: Quoth the fly on the wall:
Think of Kurtz's monologue in "Apocalypse Now!" as you read this:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Al Zarqawi: Let's prepare the car bombs to blow up the polling stations.
#2 man: We can't, the infidel's puppets have declared no cars can
be driven on those days. Their war criminals - I mean,
soldiers - will be out in force.
Al Zarqawi: Curses on the American dogs! What about walking suicide
bombers?
#2 man: No, they would be too easy to search and detain before
they ever go near the polling stations.
Al Zarqawi: We must think of another way to discourage Iraqis from
giving false legitimacy to phony elections!
#2 man: Sir! I have it!
Al Zarqawi: Spit it out, man!
#2 man: They are dipping fingers in ink! The ink lasts on the
skin for almost three weeks! We search the cities, and
for every one who has an inked finger, we cut off their
head!
Al Zarqawi: Or better still, their hand, or their arm! What a
brilliant idea!
#2 man: And we can do Allah's work silently, over many days!
Al Zarqawi: Allah be praised!
That idea has been discussed in Iraq. A whole lot of people decided to
defy the terrorists and vote anyway.
Would *you* be so brave?
Back when my vote still mattered? Hard to say.
These days? No.
