Object: Racy teen books upsetting parents
Phoney liberals criticize those of us who live by a code of decency and
morality, but it is who else will fight to keep filth out of the hands of
innocents? The good ladies from CWA do not wish to censor any reading
material but rather inform parents about such pornographic trash and let the
decision to read or not be left to the family; hence the phrase 'family
values'

Sex, drugs, alcohol and oral sex parties... sounds like things you'd find in
an "R" rated movie, but they're actually in the books your teenager may be
reading. And although any parent is happy to see their child reading a book,
you may be surprised at what we've uncovered.
Remember Beverly Cleary books? They were stories about a fifteen-year-old
girl's first boyfriend, a date to the dance, or a fight with a best friend.
However, on some teen books of today, the covers alone bare much more than
you'd think. But it's the content that's raising eyebrows.
Christine Barrett with Concerned Women For America says, "once you open the
book, the content is getting more racy and provocative."
There's a popular series for teens known as the Gossip Girl novels by Cecily
Von Ziegesar. Teen People calls it "Sex and the City for a younger set",
just twenty pages into the book.
There's casual talk about girls throwing up their lunch, teens smoking pot
in the park, and having sex instead of doing homework. The back of another
book from the series reads, "now that B's finally lost her virginity to N,
she can't wait to do it again (and again)."
"A lot of adult themes are being covered in some of these books that most
parents would rather discuss with their children in their own homes," says
Christine Barrett with the Concerned Women for America. The CWA is a group
that works to promote family values in society.
Barrett says the themes of today's books are sending teens the wrong
message.
"Society has changed and books have changed with society."
Lisa Weber teaches 7th and 8th grade literature at Hendricks Day School, and
has a teenage daughter herself. She says the books of today are reflecting
real life.
"If they're exposed to real life situations then it stimulates conversation
at the dinner table that will help them learn and make decisions."
Another book that caught our attention is The Rainbow Party by author Paul
Ruditis. The story is told from the perspective of Gin, a high school
sophomore, who's planning an oral sex party for her friends. Later, there's
a gonnorhea outbreak at school.
Author Paul Ruditis says ""kids are having sex and they are actively engaged
in oral sex and think it's not really sex. I raised questions in my book and
I hope that parents and children or teachers and students can open a topic
of conversation through it."
But while tackling topics like s-t-d's, he also includes some racy
material--including oral sex between two boys in a school bathroom.
Even Weber thinks it's too much for a teen. But can words and pictures
really effect your children? Barrett says without a doubt.
"In this world, what we see, what we hear, we take into our minds and our
hearts-they effect us."
Anorexia, breast implants and filthy language-- certainly not things you'll
find in any Beverly Cleary book--but Weber says some of the books parents
grew up reading are not "G" rated, and many of them include profanity.
"Honestly some of them are in the classics, we read outsiders, which is a
classic and damn and hell are in all that."
And although it may be impossible to control everything your kids are
doing--both women agree that involvement is key.
You can find the gossip girl series in any Duval County Public Library and
some schools as well as most bookstore chains. But you won't find Rainbow
Party, it's not in any Duval County Libraries and neither Barnes & Noble or
Borders stock it, but they do sell it online.

*Phoney liberals criticize those of us
You're not one of them, J fucking Young. You're the lowest form of life
on earth. Stop calling yourself "decent" and "moral": racism, bigotry
and intolerance will never be decent.
*who live by a code of decency and morality, but it is who else will
fight to keep filth out of *the hands of innocents?
Uuuuuu... Naked breasts!!! Fear, repressed American!

No, but you do.

What you call "pornographic" might not be pornographic for me. Who is
going to decide, you ore me?

Can't wait to see her reaction when she finally reads the Bible.

That's what I always used to love about Mary Whitehouse. You could
always rely on her to publicise all the naughty stuff that was about,
never realising that by publicising it, she was peddling it.

As Billy Connolly said "Don't worry, Mary, I'd be as uptight as you if
my name rhymed with shite house".
Everything she did and said made her made her look stupid, and she was
behind the last blasphemy in England, when she took out a private
prosecution over a poem about a gay Jesus.

No, they criticize those of you who give lip-service to a code of decency
and morality but seldom, if ever, actually demonstrate that code in their
behaviors. People like you Young.
