Object: Radio Station
I was flicking through my digital T.V. extravaganza today, and found
quite a novelty item.
It's a radio station devoted entirely to the subject of Christianity.
Not only that, but the fairly stupid kind. A posh presenter interviews
people (mainly Australians for some reason) about whatever thoughts
may have come to them in their sleep about Noah's Ark, etcetera.
How is this even possible? What have OFCOM got to say about this? I
suppose because it's about religion they'll back off apologetically.

I believe these were permitted in the UK some time ago, along with
Christian TV stations.

There are several here in my local market.
And there are several cable television networks as well.
Here in the United States, most should rightly be closed down
for violating the terms of their license.
There's no "Public service" is spreading misinformation. And
I'm talking about everything from how you could contract AIDS
to a local ballot question.

Is that like a "mall"?

I know there is no equivelant of the B.B.C. but is there a regulator of some
kind? I thought broadcasting in the U.S.A. was governed by nothing -- i.e.
Squatter's Rights.

Don't be silly. We have very expansive rules on broadcasting.
However they were changed by the Reagan administration (think of it as
Vetican I for American government). Religious groups were sold
license to most available AM radio, at a cut rate. As for content,
well if your people control the Congress you are pretty safe from
legal challenge. The group in change is more concerned with
four-letter words than the lies spewed daily by "good Christians".

The FCC has jurisdiction over broadcasting in the public airwaves but not
direct feed kind of things such as cable and satellite. The thing being
that it's held you volunteer to receive cable and satellite, it's not just
beamed into the air over "public" spectrum.
They have something of a point in that you do have to request cable and
satellite. Down to the level of channels in many cases (such as receiving
HBO is often an "option," not something that's just fed to your TV because
you're on DirecTV).
But public broadcast radio and TV *is in their jurisdiction and *is
licensed. They just don't do anything about it. Michael Powell is too busy
twiddling his thumbs to bother with actually enforcing any laws or other
silly things like that...

When the government removed the requirement for a god's hour from Sunday
broadcasting in the UK, the TV channels subsituted rather lighter fare.
The "Heaven and Earth Show" on BBC1 is actually quite good and encompasses all
religions and lack of religion in its features and there are some interesting
discussions.
"Songs of Praise" is also mainly devoted to the playing and singing of
well-known hymns.
I have never listened to the Premier Christian digital radio channel, or ever
watched the digital TV GOD channel. I doubt they would be as wide ranging as
the BBC efforts.
No doubt some of the Asian Digital TV channels have programmes devoted to
Hinduism, Sikhism and Islam.
Whenever I have been to the States, I make sure I head off to an all-you-can-eat
brunch restaurant to escape those puke-making bouffant-silver-haired preachers
in their crystal cathedrals that seem to infest US Sunday morning TV.
