The biggest ill-fated
event we've seen so far is the Iraq debacle, which has somehow become
enmeshed with the whole 9/11, war-on-terror mysticism, and every allied
soldier or innocent civilian killed or maimed there is a tragedy. Trillions
of dollars have been poured into it, to the profit of Bush's cronies, and
the detriment of Joe Taxpayer. The invasion was forced through on a tissue
of lies, and has been lied about ever since. Every time a lie is exposed,
another one is trotted out to take its place. America's international
credibility is at an all-time low. The Patriot Act has done nothing more
than squash a few more of your liberties, and give the federal government
wider scope to do to Americans what it has done to foreign nationals.

However, if we
use your definition of "ill-fated event or tragedy", it is also true that
not one ill-fated event or tragedy has happened to the country since
terrorists flew two aircraft into the World Trade Center.
