The Resurrection of the Flesh

By Kurt M. Simmons

Since physical bodies are no part of the first resurrection,
what basis is there to believe they will be part of the
second resurrection of the soul in heaven?

The resurrection of the dead is a question fraught
with difficulty for many. Preterists maintain that
the resurrection was and is nonphysical, consisting
in the spirit, not the body, of man. Others, including
Postmillennialists, believe that the resurrection is
essentially fleshly; that there can be no resurrection
apart from physical bodies rising from their graves.
In this article, we want to examine the idea of the
"resurrection of the flesh" to see if it accords with
the scriptures. We believe a candid study will
demonstrate that the resurrection subsists in
the immaterial realm of the spirit, not the flesh.

Confusion in the Early Church

Dave, I don't know who has bewitched you,
but Jesus was not raised to life spiritually,
because his spirit never died. Jesus' soul
and spirit were kept alive, quickened by
his Heavenly Father never to see death.
It was his body that the Almighty raised back
to life, with his soul and his spirit in it. When
God the Father raised his body, he made it
be alive and also to be now incorruptible
for he caused it to put on immortality.
1 Peter 3:18:
"For Christ also hath once suffered for sins,
the just for the unjust that he might bring us
to God, being put to death in the flesh, but
quickened by the Spirit."

Why can't any of you yentas read with comprehension? "Put to death in
the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit" does not mean that "his soul
and spirit were ... quickened" ... while his body was put to death,
such that he never tasted death. He was quickened AFTER he was put to
death, first in the spirit world and then in the physical world. That
is all one can infer, not that his spirit and soul were quickened even
while his body was put to death. If that were true, why would he cry
out in anguish, "Eli, eli, lama sabachthani" (My God, my God, why hast
thou forsaken me)? Or, in resignation, "It is finished"? Or, "Into
thy hands I commend my spirit." True, his spirit was preserved in G-
D, but there is no indication that he did not experience the
termporary loss of his spirit, which is known as death.

You are confused and confusing. Jesus very much tasted of
death. Jesus very much suffered death. His spirit and his
soul were not quickened until he went through all the awful
torture of the cross. What makes you think that people do
not understand that he went through something horrible
for our sakes and in order to pay for our sins? His spirit and
his soul were not "quickened" until after he had paid every
last ounce of suffering that he came to bear on our behalf
so that we can be saved from our sins. His body died and
he suffered in his soul when God had to turn his back on
his Son because he could not bear to watch what he was
going through. But as he slipped away physically, he
commended his spirit into God's keeping and the Father
did do just that, preserved his spirit alive. That's what
"quickened" means. You've misunderstood something.

That's why Christianity is the sick, twisted, blood-soaked death cult
that it is.
Thanks for reminding us, Suzanne. I don't suppose you'll be cross-posting
stuff to alt.atheism again in a hurry.
