My family's income was in the range of $20 per week when I was a kid.
My mother was so sick she could not work. My father had run off when I
was a year old. We never saw him again, nor did we get money from him.
My mother, my sister, and I had to live with my grandmother, who only
had what little came in from her social security check. And in 1955, it
damn well was not enough for four people. There was no welfare for us
back then, especially not in a small town.
My shoes were so worn out, I walked on the nails forced up from the
heels. I needed glasses - but we were too poor, so I sat in the front
of the class I could see the blackboard. My sister and I needed medical
care - but we were too poor to afford it so we had to go to school sick
or injured.
By the time I was fifteen, my teeth were so rotted out that many were
later extracted. We had no money for toothpaste or for toothbrushes.
We needed food - but we went to bed hungry. We walked everywhere -
including to school - because we had neither car nor public
transportation. We needed clothes, so we got worn out hand-me-downs
from church donations.
We lived in a drafty, nasty house that had no heat in the winter and no
cooling in the summer.
My sister married at sixteen to escape that Hell.
I worked after school, beginning with a paper route when I was 13. I
have worked continuously since that time.
I stuck it out, got a high school diploma, joined the army after high
school as an enlisted man and got as high as Captain via OCS, got an
education after the army, and ultimately wound up in Silicon Valley
making six figures.
And you want to call me a bigot.

When I was a kid, my mom's grocery budget was twenty dollars a week. I
walked on the nails though, but had to have glasses. I couldn't read
the board from the front row.
