If the dog responds accordingly, then it is self-aware and has
the Buddha-nature. If it does not, then it is probably not
self-aware and probably does not have it.
But if later on it sneaks up behind you and pisses all over you,
then you can reasonably assume that it not only has
Buddha nature, but also a sense of humour, which is far
more valuable. :|
I had a dog, a Rottie, who on one occasion during a walk along the side
of the street, decided to stop, signalling the equivalent of "hold on a
sec."
He then backed up for about 20 yards, crossed the street, raised a leg
and spritzed the area. After finishing, he then came back where he
left off to finish the walk.

He needed to update his email.

So it *is* self aware if you can surprise it and *not* self aware if it sees
you in the mirror and is not surprised.
Sounds like who ever wrote this solved the sound of one hand clapping by
using his head...

It is a long time since we had a dog in the house, but I remember the dogs that
we had when I was a child. they knew the difference between a reflection and
the real thing, and if they saw your reflection, they would turn round to look
for you.
