and Apollo 13 having a failure. do you honestly expect me to swallow that?
Unlucky number 13 has a problem. Now who would have guessed that number 13
would go south. Please.
So, when Apollo 1 burned on the pad, what was special about that?
it wasn't even called by a mission number. it was named post-burn, so to
speak, to honour those who died.
Or when 11's landing computer failed?
it didn't fail. they had a numerical overflow problem, according to NASA
myth.
Prove it. You have made a claim, so back it up.
don't have to. you claim first place on the Moon. I dispute that.
Can NASA send a team to the Moon today?
Nope. We don't have the boosters anymore. We'd have to build them.
why do you need special "Moon rockets"? You already have rockets which send
probes to Mars and other destinations. So does Europe, Russia and China.
Japan has some too, but they've got problems.
All you need is a lunar capsule. Maybe you'll want to reinvent the shuttle
so that it is capable of making trips to the Moon so that you can begin work
establishing a Moon base there?
If NASA cannot send a team today, then the Apollo Moon landings were faked.
It stands to reason. We have progressed technologically since 1969. If we
cannot do it today, then we sure as hell didn't do it back then.
Can we launch the D-Day invasion toaday? Nope, we don't have the
same-sized Army, don't have the landing boats. Does that mean it
didn't happen?
poor example, since America launched a highly effective campaign in Iraq
last year.
I don't doubt that the American military, if faced with precisely the same
conditions in June 1944 today, would completely walk the European continent
over. There would be no beach massacre on Omaha. Well, it would be all
German bodies.
We would need a new program to reach the Moon again.
so what's stopping you?

The Mission number was AS-204. It was the first manned flight of the
Apollo series, hence Apollo 1.

See the mission patch?
Or when 11's landing computer failed?

Nope, the computer locked, and it was recorded on Earth. 1201 and

don't have to. you claim first place on the Moon. I dispute that.
Actually, you claim we didn't go. Prove it was a hoax.
There's a difference between sending a probe weighing a couple of
hundred pounds to Mars and lifting humans. Going to the Moon requires
things like oxygen and food. We don't have the capsules anymore.
Also, riding a Delta is a quick way to die. The acceleration is fine
for a piece of machinery, but a little much for a human.
We could build a moonship in orbit, and ferry the astronauts up in the
shuttle. That's how I'd do it anyway. Once you're in orbit, you're
halfway to anywhere!
Which brings up a point. I'd rather we spend our money on building a
real SSTO system, one that is reliable and can lift mass for less than
$10,000/kg. One with a turn around measured in days, not months.
Thatis the key. Once we have that, the Moon is simple.
All you need is a lunar capsule. Maybe you'll want to reinvent the shuttle
so that it is capable of making trips to the Moon so that you can begin work
establishing a Moon base there?
Why carry all that useless mass to the Moon?
Can we launch the D-Day invasion toaday? Nope, we don't have the
same-sized Army, don't have the landing boats. Does that mean it
didn't happen?
poor example, since America launched a highly effective campaign in Iraq

How many troops were involved? How many of them made an amphibious
landing? How any Airborne divisions? How amny battleships provided
offshore fire?
Truth be told we can't do D-Day today. There aren't enough infantry
divisions in the Army to do it, we have no battleships, and the Army
no longer trains in amphibious assaults. But what we do, we do very
well.
Right now NASA is focused on exploring the solar system with robots.
We do that very well. Going to the Moon without a definite scientific
mission is a waste of resources. I would prefer to see a mission to
Mars.
I don't doubt that the American military, if faced with precisely the same
conditions in June 1944 today, would completely walk the European continent

Never seen a Leopard III in action? Same gun as the M1A2. It would
be nasty. Be see above. We don't have the sealift anymore.
We would need a new program to reach the Moon again.

Money. If you can convince Congress to actually fund NASA, I'll stand
up and cheer.

invented post-facto.
"Apollo 1" was not an Apollo anything, it was just a simple test of the
command module. then a fire broke out and burned them up.
so then they decided to re-invent this episode as Apollo 1. this would all
have been news to Grisham & co.
Or when 11's landing computer failed?
it didn't fail. they had a numerical overflow problem, according to NASA

Nope, the computer locked, and it was recorded on Earth. 1201 and

Th eproblem was caused by a single switch, which in training had been

i believe you are talking about a different problem. forget which mission it
was on now, but the abort sensor on the LIM came on. then it went off and
then came on again etc. they had to reprogram it in orbit around the Moon in
order to prevent the LIM spontaneously aborting on the way down. the fix
made it impossible for the crew to abort the descent if something did indeed
go wrong.
Prove it. You have made a claim, so back it up.

Also, riding a Delta is a quick way to die. The acceleration is fine

8Gs is about all we can take for a limited period.
We could build a moonship in orbit, and ferry the astronauts up in the

yup. you could have Moon "ferries" in orbits around both the Earth and the

you can do more with less these days. don't need an armada.
How many of them made an amphibious landing?
the US military has an abundance of amphibious craft of vastly superior

How any Airborne divisions? How amny battleships provided

one modern carrier group would suffice to subdue all June 1944 German

No, they never asked to abort. Houston just told them to go with the
1202. They had two of them, one at 102:38:26, the other at 102:39:14.
The word abort was never used.
Actually, you claim we didn't go. Prove it was a hoax.
Why?
I'd rather discuss it.
This is not maths, ya know, where things can be definitively proven or not.
Actually, they can. We have piles of evidence that Apollo did go, and
all the "We didn't go" theorries fall apart we examined.
There's a difference between sending a probe weighing a couple of
hundred pounds to Mars and lifting humans.
true. you can accelerate the beejesus out of junk.
Yup.
Going to the Moon requires things like oxygen and food.
We don't have the capsules anymore.
i'm sure you and the Russians could whip up a capsule capable of going to
the Moon in under 12 months. You could adapt the Soyuz, same as the Chinese
have done.
Get us the money, and we'll do it. The Chinese are funding it, the US
is not.
To put it another way, money talks.
We could build a moonship in orbit, and ferry the astronauts up in the
shuttle. That's how I'd do it anyway. Once you're in orbit, you're
halfway to anywhere!
yup. you could have Moon "ferries" in orbits around both the Earth and the
Moon and use shuttles to ferry astronauts up to them. better put up some
garbage collecting satellites to zap space junk too. make sure their
software can tell the diff between space junk, a shuttle, the ISS and all
the other genuine articles.
Shuttles at both ends is in the future. Just getting there is the
question.
For Mars, I've always liked the idea of sending the bases forst, then
the astronauts. Let then land and find everything they need already
there.
How many troops were involved?
you can do more with less these days. don't need an armada.
Not what I, or you asked. We can't do D-Day, but we can do something
different. We may not be able to land on the Moon next week, but
we're currently dropping probes on Mars, about to explore Saturn, and
two craft are elaving the solar system. Different priorities.
How many of them made an amphibious landing?
the US military has an abundance of amphibious craft of vastly superior
design and size. D-Day had a problem getting enough craft.
Wrong. We have barely enough Amtracks for the Marine Corps.
How any Airborne divisions? How amny battleships provided
offshore fire?
one modern carrier group would suffice to subdue all June 1944 German
resistance.
Not really, I've gamed this. You need raw bodies.
i'm saying your modern army against 1944 Germans. no fucking contest. walk
over. war over in under 1 month. hardly any US casualties caused by Germans.
90% of casualties caused by Americans shooting each other and burning their
fingers holding onto their cigs too long.
A German infantryman was stiff opponent, and had better range with
the Kar-98l than the US soldier with the M-16. Also, M1A2s would get
caught in the hedgerows. (I've seen them try to manuver in clse
terrain. It aon't pretty.)
The Germans also had a lot more bodies to bleed with.
Right now NASA is focused on exploring the solar system with robots.
We do that very well. Going to the Moon without a definite scientific
mission is a waste of resources. I would prefer to see a mission to
Mars.
but you need a moon base before you send men to Mars.
Why? It's just another gravity well. Build ships in orbit, launch
them from there.
Money. If you can convince Congress to actually fund NASA, I'll stand
up and cheer.
Tell Congress that America never went to the Moon. Wave piles of scientific
papers at them.
they'll fall over themselves. walk over their prone bodies.
Find me peer-reviewed papers that make this claim. We did go, and got
our money worth. There's a lot more to do, but at 10K/kg to get into
orbit, space is not an easy sell.
vote Bush out. get a new pres who will take the $87 billion allocated to
Iraq and give it ALL to NASA with instructions to make things happen.
As much as I'd like it to happen, it won't. Congress would never pass
that budget.
don't ever vote a Republican president in again. hunt down and kill all who
vote for Republicans.
So much for your views on freedom.
