okay, no prob. i've covered this before elsewhere, elsewhen, but no
problem with reiterating, if you haven't caught it before...

i grew up in a mormon family. my dad was a bishop for many years, my
mother was in relief society, etc. i have always been inquisitive,
and voraciously read through just about every book in the house...
books on mormon doctrine, christian theology, various mormon

publications,

read the bible at least a half-dozen times, as well as the rest of
the mormon scripture - pearl of great price, doctrine and covenants,

etc.

went to church every week, believed in god in a general sort of way,
bore my testimony once a month that i believed, etc.

but that started to change around age 11 or 12. i started to ask
questions in my sunday school classes that my teachers couldn't really
answer. some of them couldn't _be_ answered, no matter how hard i
looked. i began to disagree with my parents and the church's
expectations of what i was supposed to be... going on a mission at
age 18, meeting a nice mormon girl and getting married and sealed for
eternity in the temple, etc. i used the term 'plumb' or PLMB to
describe these expectations.... "perfect little mormon boy". i began
to realize that i was not, by a long shot.

the problem was that some of my questioning began to lead outside of
the church. what do the b'hai believe? what do the jehovah's witnesses
believe? what do protestants, lutherans, catholics, etc. believe? what

it like to attend one of their church services? i was told that the
only truth was in the church, and that if i would only live it, and
have faith, that it would all be manifest to me.

had a lot of heated, even violent, arguments over it. i was not allowed
to question outside of the church, and was disciplined for daring to
disagree with my parents. part of it was teenage rebellion, sure, but
a good part of it was a desire to learn.

i stopped attending seminary classes (these are early morning, before
school classes many mormon teens attend, usually scripture review and
bible study), i told the bishop i wasn't worthy of the priesthood (by
their definitions i weren't), and in general got pissier and pissier,
until after high school, when i finally started doing doing all the
things my parents had accused me of doing all through high school.

i attended college, and that's when i started posting to alt.religion.
christian-teen. i don't know if the website was updated or not, but
you can still read some of my early quotes and early posts if you look
hard enough. i was a 'truly ***** atheist' and even though i said i
had an open mind, i was so full of anger and hurt and resentment that
it took years before i could go to a church service and not want to
scream at everyone there. mention the word 'jesus' and like as not, i
would probably rip you to shreds.

in the years since then i've spent a lot of time soul-searching and
pondering my life experiences. forgiving my parents for being

narrow-minded,

albeit well-intentioned people was hard, but it was necessary. i still
think that if i'd been given a chance, i would still be with the church,
maybe even to this day. whatever.

so i've basically backed down from being a combative atheist, and

settled

into a quasi-agnostic state, where i can look at both sides of the fence
and find them both wanting.

the time i've spent in arc-t has really helped me, though. i don't hate
christians anymore. i only hate stupid people. if you haven't studied
the history of your faith, you are in a state of denial. you have to
know the history of the author before you understand what the author is
trying to say. that goes as much for me as it does for the christian

faith.

i can't believe in the christian god. there are too many contradictions,
too many outright falsehoods, too much BLOOD on the pages for the bible
to be the completely true, completely legitimate word of god.

there are too many stupid christians who have told me that jesus is the
only way to god. there are too many stupid pagans who have told me that
their magic powers would crush my spirit in an instant. there are too
many atheists who have told me that there is nothing more to this life
than the pain that we feel.

whatever. delude yourself, my only goal anymore is the truth.

not the delusions of some christian desperately wanting to believe that
god will put his effed up life back together for him, not the delusions
of some atheist or pagan who has been so hurt by said christians that
they base their faith on the negation or inversion of said xtianity.

i am agnostic, though my definition of agnosticism is changing.

i still believe that the christian god, as is popularly thought of,
cannot possibly be the true divinity. i have no personal, intimate
knowledge of a specific deity, although for the first time in my life
i actually feel that there is a divine influence, where previously
i've felt only a vague feeling of a higher beauty.....

it comes down to basics, humans have a need for divine influence, it is

the result of our freakish brains. As one

god falls another is dreamed up; we started doing it from the time we were

just able to communicate, and that means

Firstly, as has been mentioned before, they are not 'exclusively'
Christian groups, any more than the atheist groups are 'exclusively'
atheistic. They are forums for discussion of a particular subject, and
open to anyone who, for whatever reason, has an interest in discussing
that subject.
There are thousands of examples of conversations involving theists on the
atheist groups or vice-versa that are most constructive and that benefit
all concerned, because the participants, while disagreeing, at least show
each other some respect. You cannot do this, of course, because you have
become some sort of perplexed and bewildered net cop, constantly
attempting to exert non-existent authority to make opinions contrary to
yours 'disappear' - presumably because you feel unable to actually
discuss them rationally. I doubt your right to call yourself 'pastor'.
I assume this is merely an affectation on your part - you are clearly
unfit to lead a congregation because you simply cannot deal with people.
Secondly, of course, let us not forget that the cross-posting here, which
you apparently now do not complain about (?), was initiated BY YOU in
response to what you felt was 'atheist' hate from me. The fact that I am
not in fact an atheist has gone completely over your head, because you
cannot reconcile 'not Christian' with 'not atheist'. I am more than
happy to talk to Christians in their own groups, or atheists in theirs,
and some might approve and others might not. But ultimately the decision
is mine as to which groups I post to - you do not control me, you do not

No, Frank, I am not a fanatical atheist. Primarily because, as I have
told you a number of times, I am not an atheist. I am simply not
Christian. Now, I know you are for some reason entirely unable to grasp
that fairly straightforward concept, but I assure you there IS a
difference.
As far as ad hominem goes, I have also done my best to explain to you
that ad hominem argument is not always the 'last resort' tactic that many
posters in these groups seem to believe it is. A lot of Christians, and
a lot of atheists and others as well, destroy their own argument by what
they are or what they do long before anyone need start looking at the
rational or logical basis of that argument.
You, for example, preach a message, but do not act in accordance with it.
So, before we need to start looking at the reliability of that message,
we can look at the way you represent it. After all, a lot of supposed
Christians use the Bible's message as a tool for their own benefit. One
of the many indicators of this is an insistence on honorifics like
'Pastor' in an environment like this where such titles are absolutely
irrelevant. Tackling this inconsistency in an ad hominem argument - ie,
YOU are a hypocrite, YOU are this, that or the other - not only
undermines the credibility of your own claims with regard to your
supposed religion, but can also serve to undermine the credibility of the
religion you claim to follow if you insist that you are faithful to it.
After all, if the word of God was so influential and you were so
receptive to it then you could not help but act in a way that complied
with it. But you do not, and therefore others get to question whether
the problem is that you have no real faith in the word of God, and use
the religion only as a status symbol for yourself, or whether God really
does not have all that much power.

I used to cross-post Christ to atheist NGs, till they objected and I
rarely cross-post there now. What I am objecting to are atheists
proselytizing for atheism by posting their atheism to ONLY Christian NGs,
exclusive of their own atheist home NGs.
In fact, instead of talking behind our backs in their atheist home NGs,
atheists SHOULD cross-post anything to do with Christ and His Christians to
our Christian NGs to keep us informed.
