These are objections that I didn't notice:
First off, the referenced article does not present any scientific
evidence linking atheism and any 'mental illness'. Prof. Vitz
presents a theory that atheism is linked to the same psychological
pressures that lead to some such 'illnesses,' but the evidence he
marshalls to support that is always anecdotal and often merely
speculative (as with his comments on Adler). He has conducted no
studies showing any correlation whatever between atheism and mental
illness, nor does he cite or even propose any. This is armchair
theorizing, not science.
Second, even if Prof. Vitz's theory were true - even if loss of
religious belief was always caused by suppressed neuroses or childhood
traumas - that would prove nothing about whether atheism is justified.
What is relevant to whether a belief, or the lack of a belief, is not
how the belief came to be adopted, but whether or not the belief is
true. To confuse those two different considerations is to commit the
generic fallacy.
Freud was careful to not make that fallacy in his analysis of
religion, /The Future of Illusion/; although he theorized that
religion was rooted in 'infantile neurosis,' in the same way as Vintz
does for atheism, he was careful to emphasize that his theory was not
evidence of any kind against the truth of religion. Too bad Prof.
Vintz failed to appreciate or remember that from Freud's book.
