I would give considerable credit to Sir Issac Newton. Starting
from nothing but Aristotle's confused speculations about physics and
some insightful thinking by Gallileo, Newton created the first
seriously comprehensive theory that could very accurately describe a
wide range of phenomena from the motions of the stars to the tides of
the oceans. When the implications of his work trickled down to the
masses, people really started to get the idea that many aspects of the
world could be explained by purely impersonal laws. Note how quickly
the enthusiasm for burning witches declined in the century after
Newton.
The second big personage who helped bring enlightenment to the
world was --- brace yourself fundy assholes --- CHARLES DARWIN.
