I am curious as I know several folks that though they are Atheists,
they still participate in singing Christmas Carols which are about the
God they say they don't believe in.

Any other atheists that post here that do this? And if so, why? I
thought Atheists Did Not believe in God?

What would be the big deal? Mythology has always been an influence on
culture. It's just part of a cultural heritage. What of it?
Do you call the days of the week by their Norse names? Does that mean you
believe in Thor?

Like I said, if Atheists so strongly disbelieve in Jesus, why do they
sing the songs about Jesus at Christmas Time?

What's your problem? Is it against the law, of something?

Tell me, do you put up a Xmas tree? Decorate with the colors red and green?
Kiss under mistletoe? Hang up wreaths, holly, ivy, etc? Color Easter eggs?
Decorate with "Easter" colors during that holiday? Decorate with bunnies,
chicks, etc?

Because that's completely Pagan and has absolutely nothing to do with Jesus.

And if he "so strongly disbelieves" in paganism, why does he do that?

Well, you know. Christian = Hypocrite.

Not believing in "God" means that you're against music?
I suppose to the god-soaked this doesn't seem so odd, because they
often accuse non-believers of being culture-destroyers and
philistines. What a massive case of projection.

Excuse me, honey, but I don't "so strongly believe against god". I just don't
believe in your god or any others. Does that mean I can't enjoy a Xmas carol?
Please, I think you need to get over yourself. Do you personally dislike all

We aren't against cultural rituals. We *are rather against someone

If you hate Thor, why do you call Thursday, Thor's Day, and Wednesday

Who said it is a matter of "so strongly believe[ing] against God (gods)"?
Being without a belief in gods is not the same thing as "so strongly
believing against gods."
Most people are without belief in certain gods. Do you believe in Mithra?
Zeus? Horus? And for some gender balance, Athena, Astarte, Hera?
It could just be that an atheist you have occasion to meet somewhere--on
the street, in a usenet forum, etc.--may be free of belief in just one

I think you have a basic mis-understanding of "athiest".
Athiest doesn't mean "strongly against God" nor does it mean "against
religion", nor does it mean, "against christmas".
The label "athiest" doesn't define as 'against' anything, it simply
means an athiest doesn't belive in any intelligent God-being.
It sounds as if you are one of the many who think "athiest = satanist"
or "athiest = against god". You would be wrong on both accounts.

Actually, athiest is the superlative form of "athy" and so means being
in a state of being most athy. Your guess is as good as mine about
what "athy" means, though.

I wonder if he ever said "Holy cow!" I know Christians who have done
this, because it seems like a relatively non-crude expletive. It is, of
course, from an outsider's take on Hinduism.
But the problem with the literalists I was raised by is that they have a

they cannot imagine life from another person's perspective, and
they are *very bad with similes, metaphors, and analogies.
He cannot picture people who are not rabid prosylitizers, so he has a
hard time imagining how someone can see his religion as just background
cultural noise, like the Christmas tree, or the Spring

He also cannot learn the lessons from his own analogous behavior

I'm trying to think back if I was that openly hostile to atheists when
I was a Christian. I think I made a number of the same mistakes wrt
the standard Christian strawmen, but I tended to be deferential/polite
in online debates - mainly asking questions about where pagans and
atheists were coming from. I recall often having in-depth and
interesting discussions with pagans on bulletin boards.
It's disappointing that we don't seem to find that same kind of
dialogue on alt.atheism. Something to think about...

I think that a great many of the polite and thoughtful theists
eventually deconvert once they begin discussing the subject with other
atheists. The thoughtless and nasty theists are a lot more resistant
to deconversion, so they tend to accumulate.

I am curious as I know several folks that though they are Atheists,
they still participate in singing Christmas Carols which are about the
God they say they don't believe in.

The veiled nastiness: "they SAY they don't believe in".
Apparently it's OK when Christians do it, though.

Any other atheists that post here that do this? And if so, why? I
thought Atheists Did Not believe in God?

What the ***** has that got to do with enjoying the music?
One of my (Catholic) girlfriend's more fanatical friends couldn't
understand why I like Verdi's Requiem. Or why I liked the movie
"Babette's Feast" because he said it represented something called the
eucharist.
I like the music. I listen but don't join in because I can't sing.
I have had the same girlfriend for several years now. I get to see her
at holidays etc because I had to move from from Silicon Valley to
up-state New York. I even went to a mass with her, for her close
friend's sick mother. Even though I couldn't participate in most of
it.

What would be the big deal? Mythology has always been an influence on
culture. It's just part of a cultural heritage. What of it?

Exactly.

Do you call the days of the week by their Norse names? Does that mean you
believe in Thor?

Why do these assholes feel they have to show we're unreliable,
untrustworthy etc based on their own stupid strawman?
