I had no idea I thought that way. I thought morality for the
believer
stems from obedience to God out of gratitude for what God has done
for
them. Thanks for clarifying what's going on in my head.
I was raised to fear God. The church members all seemed to delight in
the idea of the unbelievers being tortured for all eternity. Well, OK,
some seemed discomforted at the thought, and didn't talk about it. But
the threat was constant, and permeated everything. Your denomination's
mileage may vary.
Some churches may not dwell on it, but any literalist is stuck with it.

The existence of the doctrine of Hell does not indicate that it is the
motivation. Not only my church, but the new testament itself very
clearly lays out the motivation that I described.
The threat of Hell may be used as a motivation to take the initial step
of accepting Jesus, especially when preaching to the kiddies--a
practice I despise. But once the initial acceptance is in place, Hell
is no longer a factor on behavior.
