On Mon, 28 Jul 2003 12:53:52 -0400, a wanderer, known to us only as
"J.D. Wolfe" <lobo@better.choice.com> warmed at our fire and told
this tale:

The Lutheran Family center is sponsoring 2000 Bantu refugees
into our small city. These people are illiterate, can't read or write
even their own language; they are right out of the stone age.
Lived in mud and stick huts. They have never seen a commode
flush, running water, no electricity, never ridden in a motorized
vehicle. But this isn't all there are others coming, don't know how
many and will be placed in as many as 50 US communities.

Actually, many Bantu live in moidern villages and work in the safari
industy.

When they arrive they will need shelter, food and clothing.
They will be given food stamps, free medical care and some
living assistance by the US State Department. But we are not
set up for this. They will overwhelm our education system and
Social services.

Gasp. 2,000 Bantus will overwhelm a nation of 300 million?

My wife is a dedicated Christian and she thinks it's her duty to
help these people. She wants to cart a family around ie to the
doctor, school and carry them to their Mosque, (moslems)
teach them English, I'm strongly opposed to becoming
involved in any way.

This is just me, by I remember the vietnamese boat people coming over
and San Jose reached out to them. They are no a vibrant part of the
culture, and we're better for it. The Bantu have a long, proud
heritage. Learn from them as they learn from you.

No our little community!

Actually, many Bantu live in modern villages and work in the safari
industy.

These are refugees from Somalia who are descendants of slaves brought
there in the 19th century and are severely discriminated against in
Somalia (and for that matter face some discrimination in the refugee
camps from their fellow non-Bantu refugees).
They are certainly not right out of the stone age since the Bantus
have been doing iron work for many centuries. In addition I gather
that at least some of the refugee camps have "taxis and buses on a
regular basis" so I would say they have some familiarity with
motorized vehicles. They also seem to be familiar with a cash economy
(working for wages, selling crops for money) thought not one on the
scale of the US.
I will also note that they seem to be quite resourceful. According to
the report on them, some adults have been trying to learn English and
many of the children are being formally educated in the camps
(including reading/writing in English). The report also notes that
many speak at least 2 languages and some as many as 4 so they are at
least use to learning new languages.

Agreed. Though the most similar group to them may be the Hmong.

gives an indication of what 25 years down the road would be like.
What they will be is hard working, with many willing to take jobs that
most American citizens won't touch.
