President Bush announced today that he would sign a bill, if passed by
Congress, to intervene in the case of the finger found in a bowl of Wendy's
chili, keeping the appendage on life support indefinitely.
"There are doubts, there are disagreements. But we must always err on the
side of life," the President said during a speech in the White House Rose
Garden.
Several experts pointed out that, while initially shocking, this is actually
a very consistent stand by the President. "The finger has every bit as much
consciousness as Terri Shiavo," according to Dr. Marvin Monroe, chief of
neurology at Springfield General Hospital. "While many experts claim the
finger might never make a full recovery, we can't really know the finger's
wishes".
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist felt certain a bill targeted at keeping
the digit on life support would pass the upper hose in record time.
"Pro-life forces will never give up on this living being. Just like a
first-trimester fetus, it's a bundle of cells that form part of a human
being."
Court-appointed attorneys for the finger declined to comment.

'Realism is seductive because once you have accepted the reasonable
notion that you should base your actions on reality, you are too often
led to accept, without much questioning, someone else's version of what
that reality is. It is a crucial act of independent thinking to be
skeptical of someone else's description of reality.'-
