According to gun-nuttery.com, KY has a "shall-issue" statute since
1996.
I've been thinking about getting a handgun, but I'd want to take
extensive
safety courses first.
Feel free to do so. Do you perhaps feel that you can't take them unless
they
are required?
I checked out Kentucky's gun laws. I need to show competency with a
handgun before obtaining a CCW permit, though I need nothing special at
all to obtain a handgun, however my desire for safety lessons (and
marksmanship lessons if at all possible) is rooted in my somewhat
careless
nature and my desire not to do anything stupid with a deadly weapon.
Good enough. Pretty much any place that sells guns as a significant part
of
their business should be able to point you toward quality local
instructors.
There are also some damn fine big-time instructors that present courses
well
worth taking vacation time to attend. It's all up to you how deep you wish
to delve into the possibilities. For the cost of a weekend of skiing at
one
of the well-known resorts, you can get a couple of weeks of intense,
high-powered, hands-on firearm training in the field of your choice. Oh,
and
don't forget that it is pretty cool to train with a partner/spouse/friend.
Good luck. Ed.
Extra added attraction. <G> Check around and see if there is a range in your
area that will rent guns to shooters. That way you can try out lots of
different kinds before you buy. Good luck. Ed.
