Well, that's fairly appalling. Whereabouts do you live?
One electronics company sells an FM antenna optimized for
"the college band", by which I seem to recall they
mean, say, 88-92 MHz. Apparently most college stations
fall in this region (our two at the U of Arizona do).
Your "college band"is a bit holy for my tastes, to
tell you the God's truth.

Pensacola, FL. Fairly conservative, and seeming to get more so. There used
to be more rock and rock lite stations and maybe 3 or 4 religious stations
on the FM dial a few years ago, though my memory of that isn't reliable.

On one of those christer stations, a religious "medical expert" running a
call-in show advised a caller not to let his toddler get preschool shots
because they're anti-christ (because christ never gave shots). After this
was an ad for biblically-approved medications, including "Daniel Chapter
One" approved meds for heart troubles.
Maybe the kid should be bled, or given a leech regimen, too.

Well, y'know, illness is caused by unchristian living. If your kid gets
sniffles or chicken pox, you need to get 'em re-baptized pronto-like!

In my area
AM
Who knows

FM
90.1 KZFR A real community radio that can't afford NPR but does run
Democracy now and a huge variety of music.
91.7 KCHO Lots of NPR, Mostly classical with some jazz in the evening and a
small folk show on Sundays.
99.9 A Mexican station.
89.5 KVMR Another community radio station with a huge variety of music and
a web presence. They are over 80 miles away and I only get them on my car
radio once in a while. A friend has an antenna in the upper corner of one
room just for them.
A few years ago I drove a performer from the Grass Valley World music
festival (http://www.worldfest.net/) to the office immediately after she
came off stage. She went in, picked up her email and had a message from a
fan that had just heard her over KVMR. She and the fan live in Australia.
I don't admit to any other stations.

I miss Tallahassee's WFSU; it was pretty well-packed with NPR and
local/national call-in programming. I'm pretty sure there were some okay
rock stations, but after the one kick-***** station in town (a "Z-Rock"
national superstation affiliate) was reformatted to house/dance I gave up.
Z-Rock was the only place where you could hear alternative, classic rock,
and thrash metal in the same hour--and they didn't just play one of three
pre-approved set-list songs by a band. I heard lots of good music I'd never
heard on the radio back in Pensacola--Toadies' "I Burn", Pantera's
"Cemetary Gate"...not even really heavy songs, but apparently not approved
for the market or something.
Mind you, WFSU wasn't always tolerable. During the Great Clinton Crisis of
1998 they were "All Clinton, All The Time"; the call-in shows had
roundtable discussions where they agonized over devoting so much air time
to the matter when callers were asking them to find something else to talk
about. They all pretty much decided, "Yeah, the callers don't like it, the
listeners are tired of the whole thing, but it's news and we're not going
to do anything else." That's when I started carrying a boom box in the car
so I could have the dulcet tones of Metallica keeping me insane =D
And now here I am in another delivery-driver job--and my truck has a tape
deck! One iPod plus one cassette adapter equals who needs a freakin' RADIO!
I am free.

Yup. The other two trucks have radios only, and their drivers lap that
stuff up; one of the drivers listens to the cons, so I know he's already
lost. The other one cranks top-40; he's a smart kid sometimes, but we call
him "wrong way" because he took over an hour to find a place that's 15
minutes away. Heh.

Frankly, I'm surprised the drive belts in it haven't shattered from
age.
