You mean 'US' when you say 'American', I assume? Don't worry. The way
things are going in your country, I'm sad to say I really don't want to
live there.
And yet - I was listening to Aaron Copland's "Lincoln Portrait" last
night, and thinking what a brilliant and inspiring place the USA could
be if it wanted.

Where do you live? The folks I know in Ontario call ppl in the US
"Americans". (Well, actually, they say "merkins")

<slap href=forehead>I was *wondering* what 'merkin' meant!</slap>
Currently Australia, but a British citizen. I feel that 'American' is a
slightly nebulous term, since potentially everyone from Tierra del
Fuego to Nunavut could be American. (As I am European, for instance.)
Still, I mentioned it simply so codebreaker would know what my
assumption was.
PS. On the vocabulary front, I am embarrassed to admit that codebreaker
has taught me a new word. I thought "decretal" was made up or misspelt.
Google is indeed my friend...

:
I agrre. The abuse of "American" mean "Citizen of the Republic of the
U.S.A." annoys the crap out of me.
It rings of parochial xenophobic arrogance.
Maybe it's just an Aussie thing?
"Yanks", yes.
"Americans", no!
P.S. If you like obscure words, look up "zzxjoanw".

Neither do I ever recall ever having read "decretal" before! (I'll
look it up later.)
After reading your post, I emailed a Canadian friend (btw, I'm an
American):
me: Canadians don't call themselves "Americans". Is that true of
false?
her: LOL. True nor would we ever do such a thing. Why would you ask
such a question?
me: Someone on usenet (a European) seemed to think Canadians are
Americans too and that therefore just to use the term "American" to
describe someone from the US is ambiguous.
her: The only thing I can say to that is ........ if that European
doesn't know a Canadian from an American then he doesn know his *****
from a hole in the ground..........LOL.
LOL. She's the one from whom I learned the spelling "merkin".
