Language is too hard. I give up.

You think that's hard, Tukla? Try adding "Fundy" to it.

American English is mangled ("center\central")("donut\dough"), but
prettier.

Australian English is more economical....we cut out as many syllables as
possible.

Australia is pronounced oz-stray-a!

I thought it was oz-strie-a. Or do you pronounce s-t-r-a-y as
"strie"?

No, you're thinking of "Australian" which is pronounced "strine" (by country
people) or "strane" (by city people)..."strine" is also the name given to
this way of speaking.

I knew that (except for the city accent). I thought the second
syllable of Australia rhymed with strine, though. Sort of.

Say "stry-an" but fluidly, like it's one sylable....you might be able to do
an Australian accent!

Yeah, it's called a diphthong (diff-thong) which Oxford defines as:
union of two vowel sounds pronounced in one syllable
Examples: coin, loud, toy.
Of course "Aus-stryan" is not to be confused with Austrian

I remember Kevin Spacey appearing on (I think) the Tonight Show a few years
back, and talking about how he learned to do an Australian accent. The
trick, he said, was to squint your eyes because the sun was so bright, and
clench your teeth to keep the ubiquitous bugs out of your mouth...and then
the accent just sorta came roight aout oll boy itsilf.

Okay - that's what confused me. "stray" - "stry". I *thought* it was
more the latter.

An American with an accent trying to do an Australian accent.

Things are getting better... back in the 50's and 60's the entertainment
industry had white men playing American Natives, Chinese, Japanese,
etc., with phony accents, when there were certainly plenty of unemployed
American Natives, Chinese, Japanese, etc., and of course everyone in
ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt, Israel, looked English and spoke with
British theatrical elocution.

that and Mel Brooks and his band of Merrie Jews mocking Anglo Saxons in
