The really successful organized religions can milk people of money for
all of their lives, all out of fear of the unknown. And along the way,
not only take their money, but control their sex lives, their
political
behavior, their childrearing behavior, the whole 9 yards.
Yes. Like in the Matrix, the machines made the humans slaves to the
larger organism (machine city, the mainframe). In the case of religion,
that organism is religion itself.
Religion therefore is more than just a scam, I assert it is a pathogen.
The host that it invades is the human mind and like a virus
taking over a cell, religion takes over the mind.

Of course any decent organized religion is a virus of the mind, in
exactly the same way that W32.Youarescrewed@mm is a virus of computers.
Samuel Butler originally observed that a Christian is a bible's way of
making more bibles. And you can say a Muslim is a quran's way of making
more qurans. The brain is hardware for such virii, which, once
parasitized, exists to simply make new copies of the software to infect
more brains.
And all of these things, like viruses, are totally inert and harmess
unless they find a host. Go to a hotel room and look in a drawer and
you'll probably find a Gideon bible. That's a crystalized mind virus.
It might as well be a diskette containing a copy of Mydoom. It's inert
until you open it and read. In it, is software which, if you let it get
running on your brain, will eventually take it over and make you go
around doing and saying the stupidest things imaginable. Along with
making more bibles to put in hotel rooms. Or wearing ties and knocking
on people's doors.
Or maybe it's a Marriott Hotel and you find a Book of Mormon in your
room. And you get parasitized that way. So now you go around with a
different set of behaviors, maybe knocking on doors wearing a different
costume. But still parasitized into spreading the virus. It's a secret
set of keys to get into heaven! Guaranteed! It will only cost you 10%
of your income for life, which you send to Salt Lake City, but in
return, plus following our instructions and obeying Us, you're
absolutely garan-damn-teed to get into the CEEElestial Kingdom! Your
money back if not. No dead Mormon has ever complained!
It's all so sad. And you'd think that with all our experience with
biological epidemics and computer epidemics, that we'd begin to get the
idea with religion and fashion epidemics. But no. I had a couple of
Jehovah's Witnesses knock on my door the other day. They were black.
They were in suits. Their eyes were glassy. Damn, they were infected as
hell. I felt bad for them.

One can take this analogy further: Personally I am immune to
religion-viruses,
not because of past exposure but because I am long past the period of
childhood when I was briefly susceptible. During that period I was
never
exposed to the "real thing" i.e. the live virus.
However, I *was* exposed to broken snippets of religion-viruses,
usually
in the form of nonsensical talk from extremist nutjobs ranting about
this
or that, and the result of exposure to these broken viruses was:
vaccination.
Furthermore, it does seem to me that some people are more susceptible
to these religion-virii than other people are, which is to say that
religion like all virii attacks weaker hosts more effectively and that
intelligence and/or independent thinking are barriers to entry for any
religion-virus.
And, having observed others who were exposed as children to religion
pathegens, I can see that they have a long-term illness which
undermines
their performance. Most of the time it is harmless, but at key points
the disease asserts itself. Therefore it is rather like herpes: it
doesn't
kill you, but it's the "gift that keeps on giving" (sarcasm!).
Lastly, I do think that strains of religion-viruses are more dangerous
i.e. they pose a mortal risk to the host and to other humans rather
like Ebola does. Radical islam is an example.
