And for Virginia, here is the (lengthy) law on teaching the pledge to
kids and having it said daily (other states will have different laws):
§ 22.1-202. Instruction in history and principles of flags of United
States and Virginia; pledge of allegiance to American flag;
guidelines developed by the Board.
A. Instruction in the history and principles of the flag of the United
States and the flag of the Commonwealth shall be given in one or more
grades in every school division. The instruction shall include the
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
pledge of allegiance and the appropriate etiquette and conventions
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
for respecting the dignity and appropriate display of such flags.
In recognition of the civic heritage of the United States of America,
all students shall be required to learn the Pledge of Allegiance and
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
to demonstrate such knowledge.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
...
Sorry, No kids anywhere are required to say the pledge...
But they are required to learn it and to demonstrate that knowledge.
Kids are required to learn about socialism too....
Get back to me when they start insisting that the teachers
recite a daily pledge to "a nation under socialism". If
that were to happen, you can imagine the yowls that would
come up from the yahoos ... even if little angel Stevie
were allowed to "opt out" and stay silent. But nonetheless,
there is no non-establishment of political ideology clause
in the Bill of Rights, so your example is inapt.
And they are required (at least in this state) to listen respectfully
while they are told that this country is under a God that they might
not believe exists.
...and yet, there it is, "under god," right in the middle of the
pledge...
So apparently you are going to Hell for not believing.
Don't be silly, you hapless moron. ...and I'm also not going to lie
on the ground writhing in agony because other folks say some words I
don't buy onto..
