And people believe this?

People not only believe this, they have taken the cry 'Creation is a
better science than evolution' as their new mantra. Those who would
normally not discuss religion when in public are now extremely vocal and
open about the failure of evolution, considering it acceptable to
discuss because it is about science not religion. This new acceptance is
contributing to the promotion of this concept in areas not previously
broached by religion. I have heard it regurgitated as fact by people
whom I wouldn't normally consider religious. It is becoming a *very*
dangerous meme.
We as atheists need to be more active in areas that debunk this kind of
misinformation.

theists. We and the other minorities.

The problem here isn't that so many theists are biblical creationists; they
are not, as a matter of fact. The problem is that those who ARE simply shout
louder and type in bigger fonts.

Yeah, I really like the "What traits did god give you?" section, especially
the game where you're supposed to match the parents with the child. As an

I went through that ***** back in 6th grade when we were learning about
heredity in health. Our assignment was to go home and look at our parents
and see what we got from who (i.e., hair color, eye color, nose, etc.) I
just raised my hand and said that I couldn't do the assignment because I'd
never met my birth parents. Some kid made a stupid crack, the class
tittered, and the health teacher turned three shades of purple. I had never
felt funny about being adopted until that point. I think that teacher
learned a valuable lesson that day. Ironically, I didn't get an answer to
these questions until I was 40 :)

LOL.
It is quite funny to us, but those that 'believe' find it quite logical
and convincing.
So far most of the work done to combat this has been done by Scientists
and interested lay people. What hasn't happened is those that know the
corruption of religion getting behind those scientists. That's not to
say that many atheists haven't done what they could, just that there are
many more atheists out there than are evident in those active areas.
We as atheist may want to just lay back, believe what we will and
exercise our desire to be left alone, but that will become less possible
if the creationists get their anti-evolution/anti-science agenda into
the education system and among the populace.
It may feel appropriate to ignore or dismiss the Trolls that visit here
but for every one of us that posts there are a number of lurkers of both
belief systems reading our reaction. It's important that we not allow
religious Trolls to spout off nonsense without directly addressing it.
Some nonsense can be belittled or even ignored because it makes the
Troll look stupid or dishonest. A lot of the posts from Trolls sound
serious enough, and intelligent enough for lurkers to be swayed; these
posts warrant responses.
It's not enough to just deride and insult the Trolls without also giving
serious, well thought out and convincing responses.
I will now get off my soapbox.
